True freshman Shayne Wireman earns a 4.0 GPA in first semester as an Eagles
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad excelled in the classroom for Fall 2013 as it had 22 student-athletes receive a 3.0 or higher grade point average, as well as eight with a 3.5 GPA or higher and one with a 4.0.
"True" freshman Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt) boasted a 4.0 in his first collegiate semester, while volunteer assistant coach Aaron Sulzer ended the semester with a 3.7 GPA.
"I am extremely proud of these guys and the work they put into the classroom., said Head Coach Derek DelPorto " We are constantly conveying to our team that success in life doesn't come from being good in one thing, success in life is being good in everything. To be a student-athlete, which is a very special privilege, is a lifestyle. You can't pick in choose when you want to put effort into winning, working hard or doing well in school. It has to be an all day, every day, every semester and every year effort until the next phase in life comes along."
The Eagles have prided themselves on their academics as they have been one of the top teams academically in both the Mid-American Conference for the past six years as well as being ranked top-30 nationally for the past seven years.
The Green and White will be back in action Friday, Jan. 17, when it takes on Mid-American Conference opponent, Northern Illinois. The dual is slated to start at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
