Mebuke/Supejova fall in final round of ITA All-American Championships
BLOOMINGTON, Ind./LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team completed its weekend action Sunday, Sept. 29. The majority of the team completed its final day of action at the Hoosier Classic, while the doubles duo of Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) finished their trip to the ITA All-American Championships.
The Eagles saw action in four singles matches at the Hoosier Classic. Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) was the lone Eagle to pick up a victory as she knocked off Yuriko Ono in a tiebreaker. Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) dropped a match to Petra Niedermayerova from Kansas State. Indiana's Carolyn Chupa defeated Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) fell to Katya Bure from Cincinnati.
In Los Angeles, Calif. the doubles team of Mebuke and Supejova made it to the final round of the 2013 ITA All-American Championships but were unable to overtake the doubles squad from Texas A&M, falling 8-3.
"We were a bit rusty in the start of the match, and got off to a 4-0 deficit. I guess that's the disadvantage of a double bye," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We will get back to work for the upcoming regional."
The Eagles are off until they head to the ITA Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich., Oct. 10-13.
