Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova have moved on to the next round of the prequalifying round at the ITA All-American Championship
BLOOMINGTON, Ind./LOS ANGELES, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team split up this afternoon, Sept. 28, as members of the squad competed in both the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind. and the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif.
In singles play at the Hoosier Classic, Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) earned the Eagles only win of the afternoon at the Hoosier Classic as she defeated Western's Tracy Kuhle 6-0 in two straight sets to advance to round three where she will take on Kansas State's Riley Nizzi in tomorrow's singles play.
Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) was handed the first loss of her collegiate career as she fell to the University of Cincinnati's Lauren Bellinger, 6-1, 6-0 in the Green Draw.
Senior Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia- Cowley County Community College) was eliminated from the Crimson Draw as she was defeated by KSU's Amina St. Hill, while Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India- Delhi Public Schools) and Western's Meika Ashby did not play their second round match of the tournament in the Gold Draw.
In the Purple Draw, the Green and White's Daphne Fredrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) was eliminated by Iva Bago from Kansas State. An extra match in the Gold Draw between Indiana University's Paula Gutierrez and Bhatia did not go in favor of the Eagles as Bhatia was retired 6-1, 6-2.
For doubles play, the duo of Ribero and Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary-Tasi Sport School) picked up Eastern's only win as they defeated UC, giving up only two points to the Bearcats. Toncheva and Bhatia were unable to pull out a victory as they fell to the Cincinnati combo of Ashleigh Witte and Caitlin O'Gara, 8-3.
Toncheva and Bhatia fell to Indiana, 8-1, in round two of doubles to close out the day for the Eagles at the Hooiser Classic.
At the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. the doubles duo of Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic -Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) and Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia -English-Spanish School) earned a win over BYU before receiving a bye in the second round to advance to the third round of doubles play.
"To advance to the third round of doubles play without playing a point is not the way you want to proceed through the draw, but we'll take it.," said Head Coach Ryan Ray.
In singles action at the ITA Championships, Supejova was unable to secure a win over Wichita State's Abby Stevens in round one, falling 6-4, 6-3 in hard fought battles.
"Klara is still searching for her normal rhythm in singles this fall. I'm confident it will return soon", stated Ray.
As a last second entry that resulted from a withdrawal, Mebuke was able to compete in singles play as she was defeated by No. 98 Kenna Kilgo from Texas Tech (6-1, 6-3). "We were able to insert Nino into the draw at the last minute after a withdrawal, so it was good to give her a shot at a nationally ranked opponent, I liked the way she played in the second set, despite the loss.," commented Ray.
Supejova and Mebuke wait to play the winner of the Harvard/Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. The winner of the match advances to the Qualifying Draw starting on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in Los Angeles, Calif. The Hoosier Classic concludes Sunday, Sept. 29 in Bloomington, Ind.
