EMU dropped its first match in the last six
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its first since going on a five-match winning streak. The Eagles (8-5) fell in three sets to No. 14-ranked Michigan State University in the first match of the 2013 Spartan Invitational Friday, Sept. 20. The Spartans (9-1) took the match, 18-25, 19-25 and 18-25.
The Eagles were unable to get the offense going in the in the loss to MSU, hitting just .129 (27-15-93). Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) each contributed six kills, while Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) added five kills. Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) setup the offense with 16 assists. On the other side of the net, Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led EMU with seven digs and Briner added six more.
EMU dropped the opening set, 18-25, posting a .250 (9-2-28) attack percentage. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan), Jones and Perinar each contributed two kills in the frame. The Spartans hit .389 (18-4-36) in the set to take a 1-0 lead.
MSU took a two set lead after hitting .355 (15-4-31) in the second frame. Perinar had three kills in the set, while EMU hit just .062 (10-8-32) in the set as they fell, 19-25.
Short gave a valiant effort in the final set, hitting .400 with four kills in 10 attempts. Briner had eight of her 16 assists in the set, but EMU hit just .091 (8-5-33) in the 18-25 set loss to drop the match.
The Eagles continue their time at the 2013 Spartan Invitational Saturday, Sept. 21. EMU is scheduled for a double-dip with a 10 a.m. match against the University of Cincinnati before taking on Duquesne University at 5:30 p.m.
