Wrestling Inks 10 to 2013-14 Squad

DelPorto Adds Seven Freshmen and Three Transfers

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University wrestling Head Coach Derek DelPorto announced the signing of 10 student-athletes for the 2013-14 season. The incoming class will include seven freshman and three transfers.

The seven incoming freshmen consist of Rocco Borg (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), Blake Caudill (Butler, Pa-Butler), Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), Chris Pagan (Kissimmee, Fla.-Osceola), Derek Schultz (Tinley Park, Ill.-Tinley Park), Dean Vettese (Rochester, Mich.-Rochester) and Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich-Holt), while the three transfers include Derek Davison (LaSalle, Mich.-Monroe-University of Wisconsin-Parkside), Austin Geerlings (Kentwood, Mich.-East Kentwood-Grand Valley State) and Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia-University of Michigan).

Rocco Borg
Oxford, Mich – Oxford

Borg comes to Eastern after an impressive high school career at Oxford where he was a four-time state finalist, placing third in both his sophomore and senior campaigns. The Oxford, Mich. native boasted a 180-32 high school career record and was ranked as the No. 36 overall recruit in Michigan by Michigan Grappler.

Blake Caudill
Bulter, Pa.- Butler
125/133 lbs.


Caudill joins the Eagle squad after posting a 128-27 career record at Butler High School. The Butler, Pa. native qualified for states one time and was named Junior National Greco-Roman All-American once.

Gage Hutchison
Buchanan, Mich. – Buchanan

Hutchison comes to Ypsilanti as the sixth overall recruit in Michigan by Michigan Grappler and was ranked the No. 10 senior heavyweight in the country by WIN Magazine as well as the No. 10 220 lb. senior in the country by Wrestling USA. The two-time undefeated Michigan State Champion went 56-0 in his senior campaign, tallying 40 pins. Hutchison compiled a 218-8 career record at Buchanan High School with 168 pins and went on a 113 match win-streak to end his high school career. The Buchanan, Mich. native was a four-time placer in the state championships, placing second in his sophomore campaign before claiming the state title in both his junior and senior seasons.

Chris Pagan
Kissimmee, Fla. – Osceola

Pagan joins the Eagle squad after finishing out his high school career at Osceola High School with a 170-40 overall record. The three-time Florida state placer had an undefeated senior season, boasting a 51-0 record, earning bonus points in all 51 matches and pinning his opponent in the state title match in just 39 seconds. The Kissimmee, Fla. native was ranked the No. 17 195 lb. senior in the country by WIN Magazine, as well as the No. 20 195 lb. senior in the country by Wrestling USA.

Derek Schultz
Tinley Park, Ill. – Tinley Park

Schultz comes to EMU after compiling a 122-28 record at Tinley High School. The Tinley Park, Ill. native closed out his senior campaign finishing second at the Illinois State Championships.

Dean Vettese
Rochester, Mich. – Rochester
165/174 lbs.


Vettese joins Eastern Michigan as the No. 18 recruit in Michigan by Michigan Grappler. The three-time state qualifier closed out his senior campaign with a 180-32 overall record and finished third at the state championships in both his junior and senior seasons.

Shayne Wireman
Lansing, Mich. – Holt
125 lbs.


Wireman comes to Eastern after finishing out his senior season at Holt High School with a 198-8 career record. The three-time state qualifier boasted a 49-0 record in his senior campaign, while claiming the state championship in both his sophomore and senior seasons. The Lansing, Mich. native was ranked the No. 9 recruit in Michigan by Michigan Grappler and was named the No. 18 120 lb. senior in the country by Wrestling USA. Wireman was first in his class at Holt High School with a 4.0 GPA.

Derek Davison
LaSalle, Mich. – Monroe – University of Wisconsin Parkside
157/165 lbs.


Davison joins the Eastern squad after transferring from Wisconsin-Parkside where he compiled a 15-9 record as a redshirt-freshman. The LaSalle, Mich. native was ranked the No.16 overall recruit in Michigan by Michigan Grappler in 2011 after he closed out his four year career at Monroe High School. Davison posted a 193-20 career record with 86 pins while qualifying for states twice and claiming the state championship one time.

Austin Geerlings
Kentwood, Mich. – Kentwood – Grand Valley State University

Geerlings comes to EMU after finishing fourth at the NCWA National Championships and posting a 37-9 record while at Grand Valley. The sophomore transfer finished fourth at the 2012 Michigan State Championships and posted a 133-45 career record while at Kentwood High School.

Brandon Zeerip
Fremont, Mich. – Hesperia – University of Michigan
157 lbs.


Zeerip transfers to Eastern after wrestling at Michigan for two seasons. The Fremont, Mich. native was redshirted in his freshman campaign while at U-M and was granted a medical redshirt in the 2012-13 season. Zeerip was ranked the No. 6 overall recruit in Michigan by Michigan Grappler in 2009, as well as receiving the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award in his senior season. The four-time state qualifier closed out his career at Hesperia High School with a 251-7 overall record, while claiming a state championship in both his junior and senior campaign.
