Kristian Calibuso helps lead Madison Mallards to Northwoods League Championship
DULUTH, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University pitcher Kristian Calibuso (Brandon, Fla. -Armwood (Florida State College at Jacksonville)) captured the Northwoods League Championship as a member of the Madison Mallards. The team downed the Duluth Huskies, 12-3, in game two of the Summer Collegiate World Series, Aug. 16. It was the first league championship for the Mallards since 2004.
The Mallards finished the season with a record of 41-29, and Calibuso's pitching was a vital part of the team's success throughout the summer, most notably down the home stretch. The Brandon, Fla. native picked up the victory in game one of the Summer Collegiate World Series against the Huskies, Aug. 15, tossing three innings in relief and allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out three hitters.
During the season, Calibuso was called upon out of the bullpen, making 21 appearances. The EMU reliever posted a 4-1 mark with a 5.34 ERA, striking out 35 batters in 32 innings of work.
Calibuso will return to EMU next spring for his senior season. As a redshirt junior, he had a team-leading 3.48 ERA in 16 relief appearances. Recording a 1-0 record as well as one save during the 2013 EMU campaign, Calibuso picked up his lone victory against Western Michigan University, April 21, punching out four Broncos in two scoreless innings of relief.
The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America. In 2013, the Northwoods League celebrated its 20th season.
