STE-THERESE, Quebec (EMUEagles.com) - One week after breaking a Canadian Junior National record in the pole vault, Eastern Michigan University women's track and field star Alysha Newman (Delaware, Ontario-Mother Teresa) secured her chance to represent her nation at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia, Aug. 23-25. The top pole vaulter for the Green and White finished runner-up at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships, July 14.
Newman posted a mark of 12-feet 5.75-inches (3.80 meters) to claim her spot on Team Canada for the international championship meet. Robin Bone captured the top mark in the event with a leap of 12-feet 9.50-inches (3.90 meters).
The Mid-American Conference indoor and outdoor pole vault champion will provide a spark to the Canadian team with her record-breaking leaping ability. Newman holds the Canadian Junior National and EMU indoor records, vaulting 13-feet 10.50-inches (4.23 meters) at the MAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-23, in Bowen Field House.
Last week, July 6, Newman won the 310 Outdoor Pole Vault Classic in Bolton, Ontario, breaking a Canadian Junior National outdoor record that she previously tied during the Eagles' outdoor campaign. Her leap of 14-feet 1.75-inches (4.31 meters) shattered the previous mark (13-feet 9.25-inches/4.20 meters), also held by Bone, and would have even broken the school record of 13-feet 11.25-inches if the mark was achieved in intercollegiate competition.
