AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – After day one of the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 9, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team finds itself in sixth place with 14.50 points. The University of Akron sits atop the standings with 30 points, while Kent State University has 29 points to end the day in second position.
EMU's Alysha Newman kept her freshman campaign going strong, completing the MAC Championship sweep in the pole vault. Newman won the indoor championship on Bob Parks Track, Feb. 22, and she added her second conference crown outside at Akron, leaping 13-feet 5.75-inches (4.11 meters). It wasn't easy for the Delaware, Ontario native as a jump off with Akron's Arian Beaumont-Courteau determined who would win the MAC outdoor pole vault title; nonetheless, Newman thrived under pressure to stand atop the podium. With the victory, Newman became the first EMU women's pole vaulter to win both indoor and outdoor MAC Championships in the same year since Hanna Palamaa accomplished the feat in 2002.
Teammate Ellie Braidic took sixth in the pole vault, picking up 2.50 points for the Green and White. The freshman from Pandora, Ohio jumped 12-feet 4-inches (3.76 meters).
Lydia Gomez-Diaz racked up a pair of points for Eastern, finishing seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 184-feet 1-inch (56.11 meters).
The women's portion of the competition continues tomorrow, May 10, at 1 p.m. with the women's shot put Catch the action live from the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex in Akron, Ohio on mac-sports.com.
