Re-Listen to the Game.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
A ninth-inning rally and a four-run 12th inning for Ball State University spoiled a home series opener for the Eastern Michigan University baseball team Friday evening, May 3, at Oestrike Stadium, 10-6. The Eagles fell back below the .500 mark at 21-22 overall and 9-10 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Cardinals (20-20; 9-10 MAC) pulled into a second-place tie with EMU in the West Division.

With the Green and White ahead, 6-4, in the bottom of the ninth, Kristian Calibuso had Cody Campbell down to his final strike. Campbell tied the game with a double to right-center and force extra innings. The Eagles had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 11th but were unable to score. The Cardinals put three aboard in the 12th and scored four times on a blooper, an infield single and a seeing-eye single up the middle.

Starter Brian Hill saw his streak of five consecutive victories stopped after 4.2 innings of work. Hill left with the lead, but issued a bases-loaded walk which spelled the end of his day. His final line consisted of three earned runs on five hits with a trio of walks and a strikeout.

Ben Dartnell (1-1) took the loss after a rough third of an inning during which he walked a pair and gave up a hit. Three of the four 12th-inning runs were charged to Dartnell and the other went to Taylor Dimmerling, who allowed three hits.

The Eagles registered 14 hits on the evening but stranded 18 baserunners. Sam Ott went 3-for-4 and was walked three times by BSU pitching. Returning to the lineup Friday was Austin Wilson, who played left field and went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Jamie Simpson (2-for-5) and Daniel Russell (2-for-7) were the other EMU players to record multiple hits, while John Rubino (1-for-5) and Marquise Gill (1-for-4) posted two RBI apiece.

Miles Moeller (1-2) pitched three solid innings of relief for the Cardinals en route to the win. He struck out five, walked a pair and allowed just one base hit. Wes Winkle was a pain for EMU pitchers all day, going 5-for-7 with three RBI. Ryan Spaulding (2-for-2) delivered the game-winning single for BSU in the 12th. Campbell finished the game 2-for-5 with a trio of RBI.

BSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Winkle singled to start the game and Godfrey scalded a double down the left-field line to drive him home. The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the frame, putting two on with one out before Longo grounded into a double play.

A throwing error off a sacrifice bunt by Mitchell McGeein loaded the bases with Eagles in the second. Adam Sonabend and Jamie Simpson each singled to start things off and McGeein followed. BSU starter Scott Baker picked up McGeein's bunted ball and opted to try the force of Simpson at second. The throw was off line and everybody was safe.

After Wilson struck out looking, Gill stepped up and hit a base hit through the left side to score a pair and give the Eagles a 2-1 edge. Russell re-loaded the bases with a single and Rubino came up with an RBI on a sacrifice fly before the third out was converted for a 3-1 Eagles' lead.

Hill settled into a groove in the second through fourth innings, not allowing a hit during that stretch. EMU's offense tacked on another run in the fourth to widen the lead to three, 4-1. Rubino notched his second RBI of the evening when he knocked in Wilson, who initially got himself into scoring position by stealing second.

The Cardinals got two runs back in the fifth to pull to within one, 4-3. Sam Tidback hit a one-out double to left field and came around to score on a Winkle single to centerfield. Hill issued back-to-back walks with the second forcing home another run. With that the EMU lefty was chased from the game and gave way to Neil Butara. Butara ended the scoring threat by getting Wellman to bounce into a fielder's choice.

Tidback plated Blake Beemer for the tying marker in the sixth. Beemer led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch from Butara. A groundout to second did the job and made it a 4-4 affair. The tie did not last long as Russell reached out to slap a double down the left-field line and score Wilson.

It became a 6-4 game in the seventh when Simpson scored on a misplayed ground ball to shortstop Jarrett James. The grounder off the bat of Gill should have ended the inning with the Cardinals trailing by just one run.

In the eighth, Ball State mounted a two-out threat against Butara. Beemer and Weir recorded back-to-back singles, but pinch hitter Dominick Catanzarite bounced out as Butara worked his way out of the jam.

Calibuso gave up a pair of singles in the ninth to put the tying run at first base with two out. The junior righty worked back from a three-ball count to move it full against Campbell. The payoff pitch was laced into the gap in right-center for a two RBI double. Calibuso saw his save vanish as the game was tied, 6-6.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Ott roped a single to left for his second knock of the evening. Longo was then plunked by Moeller to send the winning run into scoring position. Sonabend then sent a fly ball into right field, but it was corralled by Godfrey for the third out.

The top of the 11th began with Winkle reaching on an infield single to third base. Winkle was sacrifice bunted over to second and then took third on a Calibuso balk. On a Sean Godfrey flyout, the Cardinals took a chance on sending Winkle and testing the throwing arm of Ott in right field. Ott's throw was a strike to Sonabend, who nabbed a sliding Winkle to end the inning.

A balk by Moeller brought Simpson, who walked to lead off the bottom of the 11th, into scoring position. Moeller retired pinch hitter Dae Bowden for the first out and intentionally walked Wilson to try and set up the double play. The situation became even more favorable for the Green and White when Gill was plunked with a 3-2 offering to load the bases and put the winning marker 90 feet from home.

The lineup flipped back over to Russell, who swung through a 2-2 slider for the second out. That left it up to Rubino, who lined a hard-hit ball right to Beemer in left to strand the baserunners.

Dartnell came on in the 12th and surrendered a leadoff single to Campbell. Campbell moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and Beemer drew a one-out walk to put two on with one out. Another walk to Brandon Estep loaded the sacks with Cardinals.

Assistant Coach Andrew Maki came out to get Dartnell and bring on Dimmerling. Spaulding worked the count to 2-2 on Dimmerling and blooped a high fastball into centerfield to plate the go-ahead run. The floodgates opened up for Ball State as an infield single and a seeing-eye knock combined for a four-run inning and a 10-6 lead for the visitors.

In the Eagles' final at-bat, Moeller issued a walk but no more as the Cardinals took the series opener, 10-6.

Game two is slated for Saturday, May 4, at 3 p.m.
