EMU Bats Spring to Life in 11-6 Win Over Falcons
4/6/2013 6:08:00 PM | Baseball
Series finale set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – John Rubino had a career day at the dish and the Eastern Michigan University baseball team cranked out 18 hits to even its series with Bowling Green State University, 11-6, Saturday, April 6. The Eagles (13-16; 3-5 MAC) snapped a four-game road losing skid against a Falcons' (7-18; 3-5 MAC) squad which made five errors for a second straight day.
EMU took a 3-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the third inning and never looked back. Three players had three-or-more hits for the Eagles, whose 18-hit onslaught marked the fifth game this season with 15-or-more knocks. Rubino (4-for-6) set a career-high for hits in a game and posted two RBI as well. Lee Longo went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Mitchell McGeein was also on top of his game with a 3-for-5, three-run outing.
Brian Hill (3-1) was the benefactor of the offensive outburst, picking up the win in 5.2 innings on the mound. A trio of runs was scored while Hill was pitching, but he was not charged for any of them.
Bowling Green's pitching staff was peppered by the EMU offense and did not receive much help from its own defense. Starting pitcher Mike Frank (1-5) was saddled with the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) and 10 hits in just 3.1 innings. Offensively, BGSU tallied 12 hits and was paced Jeremy Shay (2-for-4) and Andrew Kubuski (2-for-5). Logan Walker (1-for-2) also went yard for the first time this season.
Jamie Simpson started off the second inning with a double. After moving to third on an error, Simpson scored when Dae Bowden played small ball with a perfectly-placed bunt single. A 1-0 cushion turned into a 3-0 lead the next inning when Longo doubled in Sam Ott and Rubino with nobody out.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard with an unearned tally in the third, but the Eagles scored three times in the fourth and twice more in the fifth to jump ahead, 8-1. McGeein led off the fourth with a single and Bowden followed by reaching on an error. McGeein scored in the inning as did Bowden and Daniel Russell.
A Bowden RBI single in the fifth brought home Simpson, who led off the inning with his second hit of the game. EMU loaded the bases with one out after a Russell walk, but Bowling Green reliever Devin Daugherty limited the damage to just one run when Rubino turned in an RBI groundout.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hill allowed a leadoff walk, but got a 5-4-3 double play to clear the basepaths. But an error and an RBI double in back-to-back at-bats would chase Hill from the game and bring on Ryan Lavoie. Lavoie's first batter, Walker, sent a fly ball over the wall in left-center to make it an 8-3 game.
After BGSU cut Eastern Michigan's lead to five runs, both offenses remained quiet until the ninth inning, when the Eagles tacked on a trio of insurance runs. The Falcons responded with two tallies in their final at bat to make the final score 11-6.
The Eagles and Falcons will determine a series winner in the finale Sunday, April 7. Action begins at 1 p.m. at Steller Field.
