Eagles Roughed Up in 10-1 Setback to Chippewas

EMU’s five-game winning streak snapped

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team saw its five-game winning streak come to a grinding halt at Theunissen Stadium Saturday, April 27, as Central Michigan University walked away with a 10-1 victory. The Eagles' (20-19; 9-8 MAC) offense could not solve Chippewas' (18-22; 7-10 MAC) starter Taylor Lehnert (3-2), who tossed a complete game.

Eastern Michigan got on the scoreboard first with a run in the third inning, but the Chippewas scored 10 unanswered tallies and finished the game with 19 hits. Starter Brian Valente (0-3) took the loss in just 3.2 innings of work, giving up four earned runs on seven hits.

Daniel Russell had another strong outing at the dish, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jamie Simpson (2-for-2) also posted a two-hit game with a walk, while Marquise Gill (1-for-3) had the only other EMU knock.

Lehnert limited the EMU bats to just five hits en route to his first complete game of the season. He gave up one earned run and struck out five while allowing a trio of free passes.

A CMU offense which ranks near the bottom of the Mid-American Conference was anything but quiet Saturday as five Chippewas turned in multi-hit games. Cody Leichman went 5-for-5 on the afternoon with three RBI, while leadoff hitter Logan Regnier was 4-for-5 with an RBI.

In the first inning, the Eagles put runners at second and third thanks to a two-out balk. Lehnert worked his way out of the situation by getting Adam Sonabend to ground out to shortstop.

The Green and White took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Gill led off the frame with a double down the right-field line. That flipped the lineup over to Russell, who sent a 2-2 offering to centerfield and brought Gill around to score.

Valente navigated the first two innings unscathed, but the third proved different. The senior righty issued a walk, hit a batter and was victim of a bunt single in consecutive at-bats to load the bases with nobody out. Only one run ended up scoring in the inning on a Pat MacKenzie sacrifice fly, but CMU tied the score, 1-1.

The Chippewas took a 4-1 lead thanks to a pair of two-out knocks fourth inning. Leichman started things off with a double to right, but Valente responded by retiring the next two batters. Dylan Goodwin extended the inning with an RBI single up the middle and MacKenzie ended Valente's afternoon with a two-RBI double up the gap in right-center. Joe Battistelli then came on to convert the final out.

Lehnert kept rolling through the EMU lineup, allowing just three baserunners—one of which reached on an error—after giving up the run in the third. CMU put the game out of reach with a six spot in the sixth. The inning was capped off by a Leichman bases-loaded two-RBI single with two out.

The three-game series wraps up with the rubber match Sunday, April 28, beginning at 1:05 p.m.
