Football Team Announces 2012 Award Winners

Players honored at 50th annual football banquet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team was honored Sunday, April 21, at the 50th Annual football banquet held in the atrium of the Convocation Center. The recipients of the 2012 individual awards were announced by members of the EMU football coaching staff.
Sophomore running back Bronson Hill (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Catholic Central) was named the recipient of the James M. “Bingo” Brown Award as the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player, while senior defensive lineman Andy Mulumba (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Vieux Montreal) took home the John E. Borowiec Most Valuable Defensive Player Award. Sophomore defensive lineman Cy Maughmer (Glendale, Ariz.-Apache Junction-Glendale C.C.) captured the Elton J. Rynearson Scholar-Athlete Award while Mulumba earned the Harold E. Sponberg Down Lineman Scholar-Athlete Award.
Freshman Dustin Creel (Industry, Pa.-Western Beaver) was named the recipient of the E-Gridiron Group Offensive Newcomer of the Year Award and freshman defensive lineman Pat O'Connor (Chicago, Ill.-Saint Rita) was the winner of the E-Gridiron Group's Defensive Newcomer of the Year Award.
Seniors Jay Karutz (North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia-Holy Cross College) and Mike Zupancic (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.-Trabuco Hills) shared the squad's Special Team MVP Award, while Mulumba was picked for the E-Gridiron Group's Leadership Award.
The Eagles, who retained the Michigan MAC trophy following a 29-23 victory over Western Michigan, Nov. 17, finished nationally in the top-75 in five statistical categories to go along with a pair of top-five rankings in the MAC standings.
Offensively, Eastern Michigan rushed for 1,960 yards and 13 touchdowns on 448 carries for the 61st-best ground attack in the nation. The Eagles have now rushed for more than 1,900 yards in each of the past three seasons. Defensively, EMU ranked 38th nationally and third in the MAC in pass defense. The Eagles gave up just 212.75 yards per game. Additionally, the team ranked 21st nationally in net punting with an average of 39.35 yards per kick.
