Eagles Blanked by Bulls, 4-0, in Series Finale

EMU falls to 15-18 overall and 5-7 in the MAC
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered a 4-0 shutout to the University at Buffalo Sunday, April 14, at Oestrike Stadium. Bulls' (18-14; 8-4 MAC) pitcher Mike Burke (5-2) tossed a complete-game and limited the Eagles (15-18; 5-7 MAC) to three hits.
Buffalo scored a pair of runs in the opening inning and added two more in the eighth to hand the Green and White its first Mid-American Conference series loss since the opening weekend of conference play. Daniel Russell (1-for-4), Adam Sonabend (1-for-3) and Jamie Simpson (1-for-4) were the only EMU players to record hits Sunday.
Burke kept the Eagles off balance all day, striking out four while walking three and throwing a total of 124 pitches. He out-dueled EMU starter Paul Schaak (3-2), whose two-start winning streak was snapped. Schaak pitched well despite taking the loss, giving up just two runs on four hits to go along with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Alex Baldock was once again productive out of the No. 3 spot in the UB lineup, driving in the winning run in the opening inning with a triple. He finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of walks. Tyler Mautner (1-for-4), Kyle Figgins (1-for-4) and Thomas Richards (1-for-4) drove in the other Bulls' runs.
The game started off with Schaak hitting Jim Topps in the back with a looping curveball. Topps would come around to score on Baldock's triple. Baldock then touched home plate on a Mautner RBI groundout and Buffalo jumped out to a 2-0 edge.
Schaak settled in from that point on, but two runs were more than enough of a cushion for Burke, who retired the final 10 batters he faced. EMU put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth when Sam Ott walked and Sonabend followed with a single, but Simpson filed out to end the threat.
Mautner and Richards each singled in runs in the eighth to add two insurance markers and make it a 4-0 game. EMU went down in order in the final two innings.
The Eagles are back on the diamond Wednesday, April 17, in Ann Arbor, Mich. against the University of Michigan. Game time is slated for 6:05 p.m.
