Eagles continue road trip to Cincinnati, March 8-10
COLUMBIA, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the University of Missouri Wednesday, March 6, by scores of 1-0 and 7-1. The Eagles (3-9) and Tigers (2-6) played a pair of seven-inning contests due to frigid weather conditions.
After lighting up the scoreboard with offense in the series finale against Kansas University, the Eagles' bats were stymied all day against the Tigers. EMU had just six hits over 14 innings and Austin Williams was the only player to register an RBI for the Eagles.
EMU now heads to Cincinnati, Ohio for a three-game series with the University of Cincinnati Friday-Sunday, March 8-10.
Game One
Game one proved to be a pitcher's duel between EMU's Brian Valente (0-1) and Mizzou's Jace James (1-0). Both hurlers went six innings with Valente recording the complete game in a losing effort, 1-0.
Valente's surrendered just three hits and struck out a pair. The only blemish to his ERA came in the fifth inning on a Josh Lester sacrifice fly.
James was effective in his six innings of working, giving up a lone single to Adam Sonabend (1-for-2). He struck out five while walking a trio of EMU batters. Breckin Williams came on with two out in the seventh to earn his first save of the season.
The Green and White put two aboard thanks to a pair of walks in the second, but Nick Rotola struck out swinging and the side was retired.
Missouri scraped together the game's only run in the fifth, when Lester poked a sacrifice fly out to centerfield to plate Scott Sommerfeld, who led off the frame with a double.
EMU put the tying run in scoring position in its final at bat as Jamie Simpson and Mitchell McGeein worked back-to-back walks with two gone. Missouri pulled reliever Alec Rash in favor of Williams, who shut the door on Rotola to end the contest.
Game Two
Missouri used a four-run fourth inning to turn a two-run lead into a 6-0 gap en route to a 7-1 victory. Freshman Michael Marsinek (0-1) made his first-career start in the nightcap, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out three while recording the loss.
Once again the Eagles' bats went cold to the tune of five singles. Daniel Russell, Dae Bowden, Austin Wilson, Rotola and Miles Sorise all chipped in with a knock, while Williams notched an RBI in an 0-for-2 outing.
For the Tigers, Dylan Kelly (1-for-2) managed a game-high three RBI and Lester went 2-for-3 with a run driven in. On the mound, Keaton Steele (1-0) limited batters to a pair of hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings of work.
Already ahead, 2-0, the Tigers struck for four runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Reliever Taylor Dimmerling retired the first two batters, but Devon Bronson came into the game and faced five batters before Kelly was thrown out at second trying to stretch a bases-clearing single into a double.
In the seventh, Wilson led off with a single and advanced into scoring position on a Tony DiLeo groundout. Wilson then scooted over to third on a Sorise single and came in to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Williams, who earned the RBI. That tally would get EMU on the board, denying the Tigers a second straight shutout.
