EMU evens it record at 1-1 in Mid-American Conference action

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Bowling Green State University, 4-3, Saturday, March 23, in a tight match Mid-American Conference match at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The loss snapped the Falcons' 12-match winning streak that dated back to Jan. 19.

A year ago when the two teams met on EMU's campus in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinal Round, BGSU ended the Eagles season with a 4-0 victory.

Saturday was just the opposite. Bowling Green (12-2, 1-1 MAC) played well at doubles, including a pair of 8-4 victories, but Eastern Michigan (6-6) took four of six singles points to up its record to 6-10 (1-1 MAC). Three of the six singles matches went to three sets.

"The ladies showed a lot of fight today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "It is tough to beat a good team on the road in the conference.  I am proud of them, and now we will get back to work for Toledo."

BGSU wasted little time going up 1-0. Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb teamed up to win 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and Jade Johnson played with Mary Hill at No. 3 and won by the same score.

Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova finished off an 8-2 victory at No. 1 for the lone Eagles win.

Supejova had a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles while Ankita Bhatia posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 position to give EMU its first lead of the day. Zsofia Biro expanded the margin by downing Grubb at No. 5. BGSU rallied with wins at No. 4 and No. 6 to again knot the match at 3-all.

Mebuke would come up clutch at the No. 1 position to seal the EMU match-victory with a three-set decison over Nikki Chiricosta, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).

Eastern Michigan returns to action Saturday, March 30, with a home match against the University of Toledo. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Club.
