Senior 157-pounder wins weekly honor for second time in two seasons
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University redshirt senior wrestler Aaron Sulzer has been named the Mid-American Conference's Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Friday, Feb. 8. Sulzer becomes the first EMU grappler to earn honor this season and has now received the distinction in back-to-back years.
Sulzer's match against Kent State University's Tom Sasfy Friday, Feb. 1, began as a closely-contested affair . In the second period with the match 1-0 in favor of Sulzer, the Cleveland, Ohio native pulled off a quick attack on Sasfy and pinned him to the mat at the 3:37 mark.
Sulzer's fall was the second of the evening and stunned the KSU sideline while opening up a nine-point EMU lead, 15-6. Sulzer is now 16-9 on the year and 4-0 in MAC matches. He has a chance to become the second Eagle in as many seasons to post an undefeated 5-0 record in conference tussles when EMU takes on No. 10 Central Michigan University Friday evening, Feb. 8, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
Since the Cleveland, Ohio native joined the Eagles in 2008, he has racked up 85 career victories–the fifth-highest win total in the history of the program. He also received MAC Wrestler of the Week accolades this season for the period ending Dec. 9. In the classroom, Sulzer carries a 3.8 GPA and is pursuing a Master of Business Administration.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
