Eastern tennis looks forward to the spring season, beginning in January

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team finished up the fall season in East Lansing, Mich. Sunday afternoon, Oct. 27, when they completed the 2013 Green and White Invitational at Michigan State University. The Eagles took on Western Michigan University and the University of Louisville in doubles, while they also took on the host Spartans in singles action.

In singles against Michigan State, the Eagles came away with just two victories in the seven matches. Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) and Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary-Tasi Sport School) each took home a win for EMU. Supejova knocked off Erin Faulkner in two sets, 7-6, 6-4, while Biro won her match with Hilary Hager, 6-4, 6-1. Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) dropped her match to Marina Bohrer, 6-4, 6-4, and Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) fell in two sets to Olga Chernova, 6-3, 7-5. Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) was fended off by Emily Meyers, 6-2, 7-6, while both Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) each fell in two sets.

Biro also played an extra singles match against MSU's Anna Zelechonok in which she dropped a three set decision, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0.

Against the Broncos in doubles play, the Eagles took one-of-three matches. The duo of Toncheva and Bhatia knocked off Yuriko Ono and Kelsey King, 8-6, while Western's duo of Nini Sujashvili and Caroline Aleck took down Davitaia and Ribero, 8-7. Supejova and Friedrichs fell to Meika Ashby and Tracy Kuhle, 8-0.

The Eagles also saw a pair of doubles squads from Louisville as Davitaia and Ribero dropped an 8-1 decision to Olivia Boesing and Rebecca Shine, while Supejova and Friedrichs fell victim to an 8-5 setback at the hands of Cassie Pough and Elle Stokes. Toncheva and Bhatia fell in a doubles match to Michigan State's Hilary Hager and Jennifer Yen.

"Our doubles was a bit sloppy and uninspiring at times today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I think we competed well in singles, but need to turn more close set losses into wins.  We have a great base going into the Spring, now we need to polish a few things by then."

EMU tennis is off for the rest of the fall and do not take the courts again until Friday, Jan. 17, when the Eagles head to the University of Detroit for a dual match with the Titans. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
