Eagles Begin Spring with 5-2 Win at Detroit

Eastern swept the doubles matches
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team started the season on the right foot with a 5-2 victory at the University of Detroit Friday, Jan. 17.
EMU swept the doubles matches with wins from the duos of Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno), Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski).
The top-three singles matches came out in favor of the Eagles. Supejova topped Viktoria Laskutova in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 1-0) while Davitaia knocked off Nino Sujashvili in straight sets (6-0, 6-4). Mebuke took down Irina Slizovskaya, 6-3, 6-1. Friedrichs won the other singles win from the Eagles. She defeated Valery Kulikovskaya (6-7, 6-1, 1-0).
"We played a solid Detroit team today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I thought our doubles play was smooth. For a first match, you'll always take the win and look to get better each time."
The Eagles compete again Sunday, Jan. 19, when they head to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on the Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota. First serve is scheduled for noon.
