YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team saw its unblemished Mid-American Conference record slip away Friday, Oct. 11, at Scicluna Field when the Ball State University Cardinals topped EMU, 1-0. Eastern Michigan (7-5-1, 4-1-0 MAC) was unable to find the back of the net for just the second time this season, while Ball State's (9-3-1, 4-1-0 MAC) only goal held the Green and White at bay.
Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) (7-5-1) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles and was saddled with the loss, her fifth of the season, while Layne Schramm (5-2-0) earned her fifth victory on the year for Ball State. McCabe saw three shots on goal, stopping two of them, while Schramm was able to keep the Green and White from the net, saving three shots.
Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic) was a bright spot on offense for Eastern. The senior took six shots in the match, including the Eagles' only three directed at the net. Bianca Rossi (Mississauga, Ontario- St. Marcellinus) notched four shots for EMU, while it scattered four amongst the rest, good for 14 throughout the match.
It was in the 28th minute that the BSU posted what happened to be the difference maker in the match. Ball State's Leah Mattingly set up a free kick outside of the left half of the box, which she sent the flying into the box. Victoria Jacobs connected her head with the ball, sending it out of reach of McCabe and into the back of the net, giving the Cardinals a one goal advantage. The score stayed at 1-0 through the remainder of the match. It was Jacobs' third goal of the season.
Eastern Michigan continues its quick two-match home stretch Sunday, Oct. 13, when it plays host to defending MAC Champion, Miami University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
