Eastern Takes Third at 2013 FIU Invitational

The Eagle women scored 595 points, good for third in the first meet of the New Year

MIAMI, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team took third place at the 2013 FIU Invitational Saturday, Jan. 5, with a team score of 595.
Florida International University took first with 717.50, Texas Christian University placed second with 636.50, EMU had 595, good for third, the Maruader Swim Club scored 361.50 points for fourth, the Florida Institute of Technology took fifth with 50.50 and Coe College took sixth with 28 points.
The Eagles opened up the invite with a third place finish in the 200-medley relay as the quartet of Helena Tolic, Lauren Kalinosky, Jackie Swartz and Mary Kate Maclean completed the distance in 1:50.33. Briana Emig picked up a first place finish in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:55.12, while Jessie Godlewski took second in the 100-backstroke, completing the distance in 1:00.06.
Later in the meet, Monica Dorszewski split a third place finish with Dani Meara of FIU, as they each touched the wall in 1:07.20 in the 100-breaststroke. Irene Lopez Llorente and Emig took fifth and sixth in the event with times of 1:07.73 and 1:08.40, respectively. Meghan Richardson was able to complete the 50-butterfly in 26.75, good for third.
Godlewski picked up a fourth place finish in the 100-freestyle in 53.82, while Taylor Straub earned fourth in the 50-backstroke in 28.64. Jessica Cavaiani posted a third place finish in the 50-breaststroke with a 31.32 finish, while Lopez Llorente notched a fifth place with a 31.76.
Emig's day was not done as she earned a second place finish in the 500-freestyle after completing the distance in 5:02.25 and Audra Burtch earned fourth place honors with a 5:07.00 finish in the same race.
The Eagles' best event of the afternoon turned out to be the 100-butterfly, as Richardson and Godlewski finished 1-2 with times of 58.51 and 58.58, respectively.
Eastern continues its 2012-13 campaign Friday, Jan. 11, when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a dual-meet with the University of Michigan. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
