Despite leading by as many as 10, EMU fell at University Arena

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped its eighth straight road contest of the 2012-13 campaign Wednesday, Jan. 23, at University Arena. Despite not allowing Western Michigan University to convert a field goal in the final 2:42 of the game, the Eagles (9-10, 2-3 MAC) fell to the Broncos (11-7, 3-2 MAC), 63-59.

Eastern had three student-athletes with double-digit point performances as Daylen Harrison (Akron, Ohio-St. Vincent St. Mary (Wyoming)) led the offense with 15 points. Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich.-Oak Hill Academy (Arkansas)) dropped 12 and Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) poured in 10 for the Eagles. Jalen Ross (Greensboro, N.C.-Greensboro Day School) added nine points of his own. On the glass, Bryant, Harris and Harrison each had six caroms, while Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Country Day (Syracuse)) also pulled down six rebounds.

As a team, EMU shot 23-of-58 (39.7 percent) from the floor and 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Western hit 21-of-45 (46.7 percent) in field goal attempts, while knocking down 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) three point shots.

After trading three-point baskets to open the contest, Ross gave EMU an early 6-3 lead with a deep ball of his own. The Broncos would return-fire, scoring the next three points, tying the game at six apiece. Eastern and Western traded a pair of buckets and saw an 8-8 tie with 14 minutes on the clock. It took nearly three minutes for Bryant to end that tie, knocking down a fade away jumper with just over 11 minutes left in the half.

Out of the next media timeout the Eagles started to heat up, going on a 13-3 run, picking up a 21-11 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. Ross capped-off that run with another three-ball at with 7:10 left and the Eagles did not convert another field goal until the 1:57 mark, when they led 24-15.

Western scored nine-straight in the final 1:30 of the opening frame to tie the game at 24 points apiece with 15 seconds on the clock, which is where the score remained heading into halftime.

Ross posted eight first half points to lead EMU in the opening 20 minutes of play, while Harrison notched six. On the boards, Harris and Riley each pulled down four rebounds. As a team the Eagles were 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) from the floor and 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from three-point land in the first half.

The Eagles trailed, 26-24, for the first time in the game when Austin Richie knocked down a mid-range jumper to open the second half. The Broncos scored five more straight to give themselves a seven-point cushion, 31-24, with just over 18 minutes left in regulation.

Bryan stopped the Western run, hitting a jump shot with 17:17 left on the clock, bringing EMU to within five, 31-26. After a flagrant-foul committed by WMU's Darius Paul, Ross converted one-of-two from the charity stripe to make it, 31-27, with just over 16 minutes remaining.

The back-and-forth offensive play continued over the next five minutes as Eastern trailed, 40-35, with less than 12 minutes to play in the rivalry matchup. Bryant made it a one-possession, 42-39, game after assisting Harris on an alley-oop dunk, then knocking down a pair of free throws. Harrison followed suit by cashing in a pair from the charity stripe to bring Eastern to within one, 42-41, at the 10:35 mark in the second half.

The Eagles tied the game for the first time since the break at 45 points apiece when Harris converted a contested layup on a dish from Harrison. Harrison game Eastern its first lead since the opening half, 47-46, but it was short-lived as Western's David Brown knocked down a three-pointer to regain a 49-47 lead.

Western extended its lead to 55-49 over the next two minutes as the Eagles looked to claw back with just 3:30 left in the contest. Despite bringing it to within four, Eastern was unable to mount the comeback necessary to top the Broncos and fell, 63-59.

The Eagles hit the hardwood again Saturday, Jan. 26, when they return home to take on Northern Illinois University. Tip-off between the Huskies and Eastern is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
