Women's Tennis Has Strong First Day at Gopher Invitational

Eagles advance in several winner’s bracket matches
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened up the 2012-13 season with several solid efforts in the first day of the three-day University of Minnesota Gopher Invitational here Friday, Sept. 14.
In doubles action, two EMU duos won their opening matches. Freshman Diana Davitaia teamed with senior Nino Mebuke to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tandem of Chelsea Bailey and Brittany Skemp, 8-0. Freshman Klara Supejova and senior Mariya Toncheva won an 8-5 decision over the University of Iowa's Ellen Silver and Caitlin Hindmarsh. Both teams advanced into Saturday's winner's bracket.
The third EMU doubles team of junior Ankita Bhatia and sophomore Daphne Friedrichs dropped an 8-2 decision to the University of Minnesota's Jessika Mozia and Paula Rincon-Otero. Bhatia and Friedrichs will continue play in the loser's bracket.
In singles play, freshmen Davitaia and Supejova both won two matches to advance in the winner's bracket Saturday.
Davitaia captured a 6-0, 6-0, straight sets win over Michaela Burroghs St. Catherine's. She then handed Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Maddy Soule, 6-4, 6-4, and will play the Air Force Academy's Tiffany Tran Saturday.
Supejova recorded a 7-6 (7), 6-2, win over the Air Force Academy's Christine Molina in her opener and then came back with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Aria Lambert of host-team Minnesota. Supejova will take on Iowa's Morven McColloch in her first match Saturday.
Two other Eagles won first-round singles matches. Toncheva won an 0-6, 7-6 (6), 6-5 decision over Mary Meyers of the Air Force Academy before falling to Iowa's Christina Harazin in her second match. She will continue play in the loser's bracket Saturday. Friedrichs defeated Sid Dirks of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-0, 6-2, in her first match.
