Award given to nation's top tight end
BETHPAGE, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University senior tight end Garrett Hoskins (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Creston) has been named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, the Nassau County Sports Commission announced Tuesday, July 10.
Given annually to the top collegiate tight end in the nation, the award will be presented on Dec. 6, 2012 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show. Hoskins is one of 33 players on the list.
Hoskins started all 12 games in 2011, ranking second on the team in catches with 22 receptions for 328 yards and three touchdowns. His three touchdowns ranked second most among the All-MAC tight end nominees. Named 2011 Third Team All-Mid-American Conference, Hoskins finished with an average of 14.9 yards per catch and caught a pair of touchdown passes against Buffalo (Nov. 12). He also had a touchdown grab in the season-opener versus Howard (Sept. 4).
The award, which has been presented since 2000, is named for NFL Hall of Famer John Mackey. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
