OMAHA, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) — Several members of the Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving teams completed the first day of the U.S. Swimming Olympic Team Trials at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.
Yesterday's events were divided into two sessions, with preliminary heats for the men's 400 IM, 400 freestyle and 100 breaststroke as well as the women's 100 butterfly and 400 IM in the morning session. The top-eight finishers qualified for the evening session, which featured final heats for the men's 400 IM, 400 freestyle and women's 400 IM in addition to semi-finals for women's 100 fly and men's 100 breaststroke events. Each of the top two swimmers in every event will punch their tickets to London.
Briana Emig, the lone member from the women's program representing the Eagles in Omaha, competed in the 400 IM preliminary heat in yesterday's morning session. The Sewickley, Pa. native finished 97th in a pool of 125 of the nation's top athletes, racing to a time of 4:59.98. Although she did not make the cut for this particular event, Emig still has a shot when she competes in the 400 freestyle, today, June 26, and the 800 free on Saturday, June 30.
Michael Fisher completed the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.07 to tie Penn State's James Wilson for 100th place out of 139 competitors, concluding his action after a day at the trials.
