YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team will take the field in 2012 with a new-look, lightweight design by Adidas, Head Football Coach Ron English announced Friday, June 22. The uniforms are made with Adidas' TechFit fabric, which promises a more breatheable, comfortable fit for the players and the pants feature a sleek, beltless design.

The Eagles will have three jersey colors (green, white and gray) to choose from, as well as three different colors of pants (green, white and gray) and two helmets but three different colors to choose from (traditional green, white and gray). All told, Eastern Michigan will have more than 20 different uniform combinations (jersey/pant/helmet/socks) at its disposal this season.

"We are excited to be a part of an elite number of schools that Adidas chose to promote on a national stage," English said. "It's a compliment to the growth of our program and something the players are really going to enjoy."

The 2012 jerseys feature either the "EASTERN MICHIGAN" or "EAGLES" wordmark across the front. The new uniforms will also display a wing design on the shoulders. The Eagles will have three colors of pants to choose from -- traditional green, white and gray. All three will feature the block E at the left hip. Eastern Michigan will also continue to use the traditional green helmet with the Block E, but will add matte white and matte gray helmets that feature a green Block E on the white helmet and a green block E outlined in white on the gray helmet.

"The uniforms are really sharp and our team is excited to put them on this fall," said senior quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde). "They have a cutting edge style but still embraces the tradition that has been handed down to us with the Block-E."

"Adidas has really stepped up by providing us with these new uniforms," senior defensive lineman Andy Mulumba (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Vieux Montreal) mentioned. "This just further reaffirms the commitment this program has to bringing home a Mid-American Conference championship."

EMU is one of an elite group of programs that will wear the exclusive TechFit uniforms. They are 30 percent lighter than standard pieces, making use of multiple fabrics, textures and ventilation zones without seams. The technology allows for increased mobility, agility, comfort and durability, sizing versatility and boasts expandable flatlock seaming and an integrated pad lock system. CLIMATE moisture management and anti-microbial technology help create a true compression uniform fit.

“We are very excited to again partner with Adidas on this new look,” said fifth-year Equipment Manager Jay Sofen. “I think the look is something our student-athletes, coaches and fans will really embrace and I would like to thank Adidas for coming up with something that is unique to Eastern Michigan.”

“The new TECHFIT jersey design will make old jerseys obsolete,” said Mark Daniels, director of football and team sports for adidas. “adidas is changing the game with this revolutionary jersey construction and compression fit because we know the right gear can make a difference during a split second play. Less material and a tighter fit means the jersey is harder to grab and you can't tackle what you can't grab. College football is more competitive than ever before and teams need every advantage they can get on the field.”

Adidas created the product with input from employees specializing in kinesiology, biomechanics, materials, design, wear testing, sports marketing and brand development.

The Eagles will open their 121st season on the gridiron Thursday, Aug. 30, at Scheumann Stadium in Muncie, Ind. against Mid-American Conference foe Ball State University. The Aug. 30 contest will be the 12th Mid-American Conference season-opening game in school history. The last MAC game to start the season was 2006 when EMU also made the trek to BSU.

Last season, Eastern Michigan posted a 5-1 record inside the friendly confines of Rynearson Stadium, as the team finished the 2011 season with a 6-6 overall mark and a 4-4 record in Mid-American Conference play.
