YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped its third straight contest Wednesday evening, April 4, to Michigan State University, 6-1, at Oestrike Stadium. The game was tied, 1-1, until the Spartans rattled off five runs sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

The Eagles (10-18; 3-3 MAC) recorded just six hits on the evening, but worked seven walks and put at least one runner on base in seven innings and two-or-more runners four times. Despite the abundance of baserunners, EMU was just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and went a hitless 0-for-8 in two-out situations.

The Spartans (18-8; 2-1 B1G) racked up only nine hits themselves, but the pitching staff lived up to its 2.66 team ERA and recorded timely outs in key situations.

Brent Ohrman accounted for a third of the Eagles' offense with a 2-for-4 performance which included a double and a run scored. He also stole his 12th base of the season. Austin Williams went 1-for-3 at the dish and drove home Eastern Michigan's lone run.

Bo Kinder's 15-game hitting streak was snapped as MSU pitchers held the senior outfielder to an 0-for-3 evening. However, Kinder did earn a walk in his opening at bat to push the mark to 22 games in which he has reached base safely at least once.

Head Coach Jay Alexander used seven different pitchers Wednesday including starter Jordan Glover, who took a no-decision after tossing two innings. Taylor Dimmerling (0-1) ended up recording the loss in a rough one-third inning of work in which he was charged for three runs on one hit, a walk and a hit batsman in MSU's five-run sixth frame.

Spartans reliever Trey Popp (2-0) earned the win in two scoreless innings of relief. Starter Mick VanVossen lasted four innings and gave up one earned run on four hits.

Torsten Boss and Ryan Krill each went 2-for-4 for Michigan State, with Boss smashing his fourth home run of the season to tie the game at one in the fourth. Joel Fisher (1-for-4) registered the winning RBI in the sixth.

Ohrman led off the second inning with a double which landed just fair down the left field line. After Tucker Rubino laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to scoot Ohrman to third, Williams hit a line drive to right field to plate the EMU third baseman for a 1-0 lead.

Boss hit a towering shot over the right field wall with two gone in the fourth to tie the game at one apiece. In the bottom of that frame, the Eagles put runners on second and third with one out. A wild pitch by VanVossen sent Ohrman sprinting toward the plate, but catcher John Martinez gathered the ball and tossed over to the pitcher covering home for the tag.

The Spartans had a chance to take their first lead of the afternoon in the fifth with runners on the corners and two out. EMU's fourth pitcher of the game, Paul Schaak, stranded both baserunners as Ryan Jones lined out harmlessly to left field.

Dimmerling was not as fortunate in the sixth, as Fisher's one-out single to left center scored Jordan Keur from second base to make it a 2-1 game for MSU. With Collin Taylor on the hill, the Spartans pushed across four more runs on three hard hit singles and a walk. The inning finished only after the visitors sent 10 men to the plate and scored five times for a 6-1 lead.

Lee Longo then singled to start off the EMU sixth. Rubino followed with a one-out walk to once again give the Eagles a pair of baserunners with less than two out. Williams grounded out which advanced Longo and Rubino to second and third, but Adam Dennison made the third out to keep the deficit at five runs.

In the eighth, the Eagles loaded the bases with one out. Sam Ott started things off with a single, and Longo and Rubino each drew walks. MSU reliever Bryce Jenney worked himself out of the jam as he induced a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Williams on the first pitch of the at-bat to end the inning.

EMU went down in order in its final at bat to fall to 1-2 against Big Ten Conference opponents this season. The Eagles will have one more shot at the Spartans Wednesday, April 11, in East Lansing.

The Eagles return to Mid-American Conference play Friday-Sunday, April 6-8, when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face cross-state rival Western Michigan University.
