Eagles improve to 4-2 in MAC action with 4-3 victory
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team improved to 4-2 in Mid-American Conference play with a 4-3 win over the University at Buffalo here Saturday, April 14, in a league dual match at the University Tennis Center.
Eastern bounced back from a 6-1 loss at MAC-leading Toledo Friday, to post the Saturday win over the Bulls of Buffalo. Eastern is now 8-13 overall.
Buffalo drops to 2-5 in league play and 6-11 overall.
"This is a solid road win for us," Ray said of his team's win. "Buffalo's a tough road trip, but the ladies came to play. Our doubles continues to be a strength and a good source of momentum for us. We have one more weekend to hold on to third place."
The Eagles won the doubles point to start with a 1-0 lead with the No. 1 team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke defeating Marta Stoyanova and Miranda Podlas, 8-3, followed by the No. 2 team of Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr producing an 8-1 win over Kira Golenko and Tamara Markovic.
Eastern then went on to split the singles action. Westerink defeated Marta Stoyanova, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and at No. 4, EMU's Daphne Friedrichs fought hard for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Golenko.
EMU's Marcela Rivero secured the win with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Buffalo's Anamara Candanoza at No. 6 singles.
