Women's Tennis Falls on the Road to Akron

Host Zips go to 5-1 in MAC play with 6-1 victory
FAIRLAWN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team saw its Mid-American Conference record dip to 3-2 with a 6-1 loss to the University of Akron here Friday, April 13, in a league dual match held outdoors at the Springside Racket Club.
Eastern, is now 3-2 and 7-13 overall, while Akron improves to an impressive 19-2 overall mark and a 5-1 league record.
“We put up a good fight today, but Akron was just better,” Ray said of his team's effort. “We need to recover, head to Buffalo, and get ready for a battle tomorrow.”
The EMU doubles team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke started the Eagles off with a 9-7 win over Zara Harutunyan and Prang Pantusart at No. 1 doubles.
Akron would go on to capture the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Senior Westerink was the lone Eagle to score a singles point as she won a grueling, 6-7 (1), 6-2, 10-8, victory over Akron's Olga Shkundina at No. 2 singles. The Zips closed out the win by winning the remaining five singles matches.
EMU will now head to Buffalo Saturday, April 14, for a dual match against the Bulls of the University at Buffalo.
