EAGLES OPEN FIRSTENERGY MAC TOURNAMENT AT HOME VS. NIU: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will open the 2012 FirstEnergy Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at home Monday, March 5, with a first-round game against the Northern Illinois University Huskies.
EMU enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed while NIU is No. 12. The two teams have met twice this season and Eastern has captured both contests, recording a 47-40 win to begin the MAC season, Jan. 7, in DeKalb, Ill., and coming from 13 points down late in the game to post a 48-45 win in Ypsilanti, Mich., Feb. 22.
EMU won its first-ever MAC West Division title with a 9-7 MAC mark while also recording a 14-17 overall record. NIU enters Monday's game with a 4-25 overall mark and a 3-13 league record.
EAGLES AND HUSKIES MEET FOR THE SECOND TIME: EMU and NIU have played just once in the MAC Tournament, during the 2009-10 tournament, and that game was won by Eastern, 65-59, March 7, 2010, in the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti.
Eastern has a 22-26 record in MAC Tournament action and has won the tournament title in four of six appearances in the championship game. Monday's, March 5, game will be the eighth time that Eastern has hosted a first-round tournament game and the Eagles are 5-2 in those games, the first five played in Bowen Field House and the last two in the Convocation Center.
CHECKING THE SERIES: Northern Illinois has a 49-32 edge in the series, but EMU has won seven of the last 11 meetings. EMU and Northern have met just once in MAC Tournament play and EMU recorded a 65-59 win, March 7, 2010, in Eastern's Convocation Center. Following is a brief summary of the two games played this year.
Game 1: Jan. 7, 2012-DeKalb, Ill.: Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) made six straight free throws in the final 1:34 to boost the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team to a 47-40 win over Northern Illinois University here Saturday, Jan. 7, in the Convocation Center in the 2012 Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
Holding a slim 41-40 lead with 2:23 left in the game, the EMU defense held the Huskies scoreless the rest of the way and NIU, forced to foul Lampley to get the ball back, saw the 5-foot-10 Eagles' point guard make all six of his charity tosses on the way to a 16-point performance.
Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles, now 6-9 overall and 1-0 in league action, shot just 36.1 percent from the field, making 13-of-36 attempts, but shot a blistering 79.2 percent from the free throw line, making 19-of-24.
NIU, now 1-12 overall and 0-1 in the MAC, was held to just 29.2 percent shooting from the field on 14-of-48 attempts and the Eagles turned the Huskies over a whopping 18 times. NIU did win the battle of the boards, 31-29. The Huskies were led in scoring by Tim Toler with 11.
Game 2: Feb. 22, 2012-Ypsilanti, Mich.: A furious second-half comeback propelled the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team to a 48-45 win over a visiting Northern Illinois University team here Wednesday, Feb. 22, in a Mid-American Conference men's basketball game in the Convocation Center.
Trailing by 13, 39-26, with 11:49 left in the game, the Eagles went on a 15-0 run to take a 41-39 with 3:08 and the home team never relinquished that advantage, posting the three-point win.
With the win, Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles, now 7-6 in the MAC West and 12-16 overall, kept their lock on first place in the West Division.
The loss drops NIU to 3-23 overall and 2-11 in league action.
Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) led the Eagles with 21 points to go along with four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Junior guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) added 10 points. Sophomore center Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Country Day-Syracuse) had six points with six rebounds.
NIU had two players, Abdel Nader and Tony Nixon, with 10 points each.
EMU'S CAREER DIVISIONAL RECORD: The Mid-American Conference has had West-East Divisional competition since 1997-98.
