Women's Tennis Opens MAC Season With 4-3 Win at Toledo

Eagles snap five-match losing streak with win
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team not only snapped a five-match losing streak but also opened the Mid-American Conference season with a win, defeating the host University of Toledo Rockets, 4-3, here Friday, March 23, at the University of Toledo courts. The EMU win also halted a five-match winning streak for the 7-7 Rockets.
Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eagles, now 5-10 overall and 1-0 in league play, started with a flurry, winning all three doubles matches to begin the dual.
The No. 1 doubles team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke won a close 9-8 decision over Toledo's Kelsey Anonsen and Lexy Pitt. The No. 2 doubles duo of Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr handed Toledo Chrissy Coffman and Pia Rygh an 8-3 setback and the EMU No. 3 team of Daphne Friedrichs and Marcela Rivero handled Alexandra Cristello and Amanda Border, 8-3.
The singles play did not come as easy for the Eagles as they split the six decisions. Mebuke, at No. 1, Ankita Bhatia at No. 3 and Rivero at No. 6 won their singles matches to give EMU the 4-3 decision.
Bhatia turned in a thrilling victory, defeating Toledo's Pitt, 7-6, 7-6, winning both tie-breakers, four and five.
Eastern will now move on to Louisville, Ky. to meet the University of Louisville in a non-conference dual match Sunday, March 25.
