Eagles win doubles point in setback
HONOLULU, Hawai'i (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team had a strong start, but lost momentum late in a 6-1 loss to Iowa State University here Thursday, March 1, in a non-conference dual match on the University of Hawai'i Outdoor Tennis Courts.
The loss closes out EMU's two-match Hawai'i trip and the Eagles, now 4-7, are scheduled to play in Los Angeles, Calif. Saturday, March 3, against Loyola-Marymount to close out their road trip.
“This is a very disappointing loss,” EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray said. “After clinching the doubles point and the four first sets in singles, you norminally win the match. We shut down at that point and didn't finish. We must get better at this.”
EMU's No. 1 doubles team of Miram Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) and Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia/Aia-Gess English-English-Spanish School) defeated Iowa State's Maria Fernanda Macedo and Tessa Lang, 8-3, and the No. 2 team of Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr (Adelaide, Australia-Sacred Heart) beat ISU's Simona Cacciuttolo and Ksenia Pronina, 9-8, to give EMU the one doubles point.
Eastern then started the singles matches and won the first set in four matches before dropping all six singles contests in the 6-1 setback.
