EMU Heads to CMU for Valentine's Day Showdown

EMU HEADS TO CMU FOR VALENTINE'S DAY SHOWDOWN: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will be out to avenge an earlier season loss to Central Michigan University when the Eagles travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for  Valentine's Day tilt, Feb. 14. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the McGuirk Center.
EMU and CMU played Jan. 11 in Ypsilanti and the visiting Chippewas notched a 60-56 win.  EMU had three players in double figures in that contest with Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) scoring 12 and Austin Harper (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven-Glen Oaks C.C.) and Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) both chipping in 10 each.  CMU also had three in doubles, with Derek Jackson scoring 15, Austin McBroom 13, and Trey Zeigler 11.

BACK TO THE WEST:  EMU completed its six-game swing through the Mid-American Conference East Division with a 68-55 win over a visiting Ohio team Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Convocation Center. The West Division Eagles opened the MAC season with five divisional games. Following that the Eagles played all six East Division teams and now the Green and White finish the league season against the five West Division foes.

HOLDING THE LEAD:  EMU remains on top of the Mid-American Conference West Division with a 6-5 league record. 

CHECKING THE SERIES:  Central Michigan leads the series, 97-87.  The Chippewas hold a 6-4 edge over the past 10 games, dating back to a split in 2007-08.

SIMPLY THE BEST:  Two EMU players turned in personal bests in Saturday's, Feb. 11, win over Ohio.  Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) dished out a career-best nine assists while junior guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) scored a season-high 23 points in just 18 minutes.

SUPER SATURDAY:  The campus of Eastern Michigan University was abuzz with action Saturday, Feb. 11, as three of the school's intercollegiate athletic teams competed at home. Additionally, the E-Club, a group of former EMU varsity athletic letterwinners, enshrined seven new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
This year's class marked the 36th anniversary of the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held Saturday in the EMU Student Center. The Class of 2011 includes:  Howard Booth (men's gymnastics), Ingrid Boyce Benn (women's track), Traci Parsons McMullen (women's basketball, women's track), Linda Milholland (softball), Jamie Nieto (men's track), Norm Parker (football) and John Schmidt (football).
The EMU gymnastics team beat the Broncos of Western Michigan University, inside Bowen Field House.
Head Women's Basketball Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's team got the basketball rolling in the Convocation Center Saturday with an 83-47 win over Kent State University and the men's team followed with a 68-55 win over Ohio.
Polish-American Heritage Day was also be celebrated throughout the hoops doubleheader with a Polish art show and historical exhibits. Polish dance troupes, folk music and Polish food items will also be featured. Magda Kaminski, a Polish pop-rocker, was featured at halftime of both games, showcasing her upcoming album.

MILESTONES:  Several EMU players have hit milestone or are very close after 24 games of the 2011-12 season.
Senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) has played in 117 games for the Eagles while earning 59 starts.  He has scored 677 points to rank 63rd in the EMU record books and his 285 career rebounds is good for 65th and his 120 three-point field goals is good for 12th.
Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is tied for 49th in career rebounds with 347 and his 128 career blocked shots is good for second, trailing only Theron Wilson (1992-96) who had 257 career swats.
Senior point guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) is 84th in scoring with 527 points and junior Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) is tied for 15th in three-point field goals with 90 career triples.

MOVING UP IN THE MAC STATS PICTURE:  As a team, the Eagles are in the top half of the Mid-American Conference in five categories heading into the CMU game Tuesday, Feb. 14. Eastern leads the league in scoring defense (59.6 ppg), fourth in the league in 3-point field goal percentage-defense (.311) and field goal percentage defense (.407), fifth in blocks (3.3) and sixth in free throw percentage (.689).
Individually, senior point guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) is 10th in scoring (13.3), third in free throw percentage (.849), 11th in three-point field goals made (1.6), and 15th in assists (2.9). Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is fourth in blocked shots (1.4) and senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) is tied for 15th in steals (1.3) and 15th in three-point field goal percenage (.346).

TOUGH IN THE CONVO: The 2011-12 Eagles have made the Convocation Center a tough place for opponents as the Green and White have posted a 7-3 record in the home arena. EMU's only three setbacks at home have been to Michigan State, Central Michigan and Kent State.
