YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team won the annual EMU Invitational by scoring 770 points on day two of the invite. Eastern won with 1,165 points, Oakland University took second with 1,042, Wayne State University was third with 768, while the University of Findlay took fourth with 383.
In the morning session, Briana Emig took the first win of the day for EMU posting a 4:19.80 in the 400 individual medley, while Jackie Swartz followed that with a top-place in the 100 butterfly in 54.58. Sara Ghaffari took third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.53. Becca Detro, Monica Dorszewski and Helena Tolic went 2-3-4 in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:53.32, 1:53.39 and 1:53.60, respectively. Vanessa Weidner took second in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:04.70, while Lauren Kalinosky took third with a 1:05.20 finish. The quartet of Emig, Jessie Godlewski, Tolic and Dorszewski took second in the 800 freestyle relay with a 7:30.97.
On the diving boards, Kelly Hendricks and Karly Taylor took first and second with scores of 345.30 and 290.30, respectively, in the three-meter dive.
The evening session began with an Eastern victory as Mary Kate Maclean, Godlewski, Swartz and Ghaffari set a new meet record with a 1:33.75 in the 200 freestyle relay. Emig added another win with a 4:49.25 in the 500 freestyle. Maclean picked up a victory in the 50 freestyle with a 23.36 and Swartz took second in the 200 individual medley with a 2:03.68.
The EMU women's team is off until the turn of the year as they do not compete again until Jan. 5, when it travels to Miami, Fla. for the Florida International University Invitational.
