Sophomore distance runner earns award for first time
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced Friday, Dec. 14, that Eastern Michigan University women's track and field star Victoria Voronko (Moscow, Russia-University of Moscow) has been named Co-Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week, Dec. 3-9.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week award is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty and athletic representatives.
A sophomore distance runner, Voronko, secured 10 points for her team by winning the 3,000-meter run in 10:01.52 at the Eagle Holiday Meet Friday, Dec. 7. Voronko's score helped lead the EMU women's track and field team to victory over four other schools in the Green and White's season opener. Eastern scored 189.50, more than double that of second place Central Michigan who finished with 92 points.
Voronko is currently an Individualized Studies Program major with a 3.90 grade point average. She and the rest of the EMU women's track and field team will be back in action, Jan. 11, as hosts of the EMU Triangular at Bowen Field House on Bob Parks Track.
