Eagles Fall in Cross-Divisional Battle at Akron

EMU Volleyball dropped its third-straight in MAC play
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball squad lost its third-straight match after traveling to the University of Akron for a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional tilt. The Eagles took the opening frame but dropped three sets in a row to fall in four (14-25, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25).
With the loss, Eastern fell to 13-12 on the season and 3-6 in conference play, while the Zips moved to 11-10 and 4-5 in the MAC.
Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Eagles with 17 kills and 16 digs, while Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) posted eight kills in the match. Kim Hildreth (Novi, Mich.-Novi) and Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) split time at the setter position. Hildreth notched 23 assists, while Davis posted 14.
EMU struggled in the opening frame, hitting just .139 (10-5-36). The Eagles dropped the frame, 14-25. EMU had a pair of student-athletes post three kills in the frame as both Iaquaniello and Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) accomplished the task. Akron's offense was too strong in the set, hitting .333 (15-4-33) in the set, helping them to the 1-0 lead.
The Green and White return-fired with a 25-20 set victory in the second set, as both Iaquaniello and Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) each notched a trio of kills. Despite hitting just .086 (10-7-35), the Eagles were able to hold the Zips to a -.070 attack percentage (9-12-43) en route to a set victory.
Iaquaniello notched six kills in the third set, while Baker had four, but it was not enough as the Eagles fell, 22-25, in the third frame. EMU struggled to get the offense going, posting an .073 attack percentage (13-9-55) in the frame.
Eastern dropped the final set, 22-25. The Zips hit .213 (16-6-47), while the Eagles could only manage a .140 hitting percentage (12-6-43). Iaquaniello again led the Green and White with five kills, but it was not enough as EMU dropped the match in four sets.
The Eagles continue their road swing with a match against the University at Buffalo Saturday, Oct. 20. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
