EMU RETURNS HOME FOR INSTATE BATTLE WITH WMU: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team returns home after a thrilling 51-48 last-second win at Ball State, Jan. 14, to host the Western Michigan University Broncos Wednesday, Jan. 18, in a 7 p.m. Mid-American Conference West Division tilt in the Convocation Center.
First-year Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles enter the game with a 7-10 overall record and a 2-1 MAC mark. Western Michigan is in a four-way tie with EMU, Ball State and CMU for first place in the MAC West with 2-1 league marks. Head Coach Steve Hawkins' Broncos are 8-9 overall.
THRILLER IN MUNCIE: Senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) buried a three-point field goal from the top of the arc with just 1.5 seconds left to break a 48-all tie and give Eastern Michigan a 51-48 win over the Ball State University Cardinals Saturday, Jan. 14, in Worthern Arena. That late rally was set up by senior guard Quintin Dailey's (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheridan C.C.) three-point shot and a pair of free ones, making it 48-48 with 1:41 left.
TOUGH ON THE ROAD: The Eagles have endured a long road schedule this year, playing 11 of their 17 games away from the Convocation Center. Despite that disparity between home and away, the Green and White has a 4-7 road record, including capturing both of its Mid-American Conference games away from Ypsilanti. EMU opened the 2012 MAC season with a 47-40 win at Northern Illinois, Jan. 7, and followed that up with a 51-48 last-second thriller at Ball State, Jan. 14.
INSTANT Q: EMU senior guard Quintin Dailey (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheriday C.C.) came up with a late game-saving offensive flurry in EMU's 51-48 win at Ball State, Jan. 14. With the Eagles trailing by a 48-43 count with just 2:11 left, the 6-foot-3 Dailey hit a three-point field goal at the 2:08 mark to cut it to two, 48-46, and then added two free throws with 1:41 left to tie it at 48-all. Senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) would then hit a three with just 1.5 seconds left to give EMU the road win.
CONVO DEBUT: The CMU game, Jan. 11, marked the Convocation Center debut of EMU sophomore center Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Country Day-Syracuse) and the 7-footer responded with five points, a career-best 10 rebounds with two blocks in 26 minutes of action. Riley transferred this fall from Syracuse University and sat out the first 10 games of the 2011-12 season before being awarded an NCAA transfer waiver to be able to play this season. He has played in seven games and is averaging 5.1 points and 4.1 rebounds.
BLOCK PARTY: Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) recorded five blocked shots against Central Michigan Wednesday, Jan. 11, to give him 27 blocks on the season. He is currently second in the EMU record books with 122 career rejects.
STRONG DOWN THE STRETCH: Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) turned in an outstanding effort down the stretch, Jan. 7, in a 47-40 win at Northern Illinois. With EMU leading by one, 41-40, with under two minutes left, the EMU defense held the Huskies scoreless the rest of the way. While NIU was not posting any points, the Huskies were forced to foul and they chose the wrong player in Lampley. The 5-foot-10 point guard calmly sank all six of his free throw attempts over the game's final 1:34 to preserve the win for the Eagles. Lampley would end up with a 16-point afternoon, including making 9-of-10 charity tosses.
MOVING UP IN THE MAC STATS PICTURE: As a team, the Eagles are in the top half of the Mid-American Conference in five categories heading into the WMU game Wednesday, Jan. 18. Eastern is second in scoring defense (60.1), third in field-goal percent defense (41.1), fourth in free throw percentage (70.1) and sixth in three-point shooting percentage defense (31.5) and defensive rebounding (33.7). Individually, senior point guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) is ninth in scoring (13.5) and third in free throw percentage (.873) and junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is third in blocked shots (1.6).
MILESTONES: Several EMU players have hit milestone or are very close after the first 17 games of the 2011-12 season.
