DURHAM, N.C. (EMUEagles.com)–Former Eastern Michigan University baseball standout pitcher Matt Shoemaker has cracked the roster of the 2011 US World Cup/Pan Am Team, USA baseball announced Thursday, Sept. 15. The team will compete in both the IBAF Baseball World Cup in Panama City, Panama, Oct. 2-15, and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico (baseball competition to be held in Lagos de Moreno), Oct. 20-25.  The U.S. roster features 24 players not currently on Major League Baseball 40-man rosters.

The Chicago White Sox led all Major League clubs with three players from its farm system named to the team.  The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, and Texas Rangers each placed two players on the club, and the remaining players each came from one of 11 other big league organizations.

Shoemaker, now a pitcher in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization, posted tremendous numbers in 2011 including a 12-7 overall record with a 3.15 ERA in 27 starts, 25 of which were with the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League and the other two with Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.

The 6-foot, two-inch right hander from Trenton, Mich. garnered 2011 Pitcher of the Year accolades for the Texas League and received Pitcher of the Week honors three times this season in a starting role for the Travelers. He recorded five complete games along with a pair of shutouts in 177.1 innings pitched and notched an impressive 160 punch-outs.

During his time as a member of the Eagles (2005-08), Shoemaker set EMU's single-season record in saves (14) in 2007 while recording a 3.97 ERA in 34 innings of work and 23 strikeouts. He was also a second team All-MAC selection that season. In 2008, he was named to the MAC All-Academic team and was an All-MAC second team selection for the MAC Tournament champion Eagles. Overall, he appeared in 56 games and compiled a 6-7 record with a 4.85 ERA in 137.1 innings.

Shoemaker signed a free agent contract with Angels organization in 2008.
