Eagles Fall to Fighting Irish in 2011 Season Opener

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - - The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team opened up the 2011 campaign with a 3-1 loss in the Shamrock Invitational. The Eagles dropped the season opener to the invite's host, the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish. After dropping the first set 30-32, the Green and White rallied to take the second set 25-19. However, it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell in the final two frames of the match, 17-25 and 14-25.
EMU is now 0-1 on the year while the Fighting Irish move to 1-0 in the young season.
Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) and Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) led the Eagles offensively. Iaquaniello posted 13 kills while Baker banged home 10 of her own. Katherine Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) posted a .500 hitting percentage in two sets of action. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) led the Green and White with 40 assists in the season opening loss.
Andrea McHugh had a match best 16 kills for the Fighting Irish, while Maggie Brindock had 29 assists for Notre Dame.
The Green and White fought hard out of the gate despite dropping the opening set 30-32. Head Coach Kim Berrington was able to regroup her troops to pick-up the second set 25-19. The Irish proved to be too much down the stretch as they took the final two sets of the match, 17-25 and 14-25.
The Eagles hit the court again on Saturday, Aug. 27 when they take on the Butler Bulldogs (0-1) for their second match of the Shamrock Invitational. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Joyce Center in South Bend, Ind.
