The EMU Volleyball squad takes on Notre Dame to open the 2011 campaign

HERE'S HOW IT WILL START: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team opens the 2011 season this weekend, Aug. 26-28, with three matches at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The Eagles open tournament play Friday, Aug. 26, against the host Fighting Irish at 7 p.m. The Eagles second match of the invite comes on Aug. 27 when they have an afternoon bout with the Butler Bulldogs. EMU concludes the tournament Sunday, Aug. 28, when the team faces the Vandals of Idaho at 11:00 a.m. All matches will take place at the Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center on the South Bend, Indiana campus.
EAGLES SOAR INTO 2011 CAMPAIGN: The Green and White return 10 letterwinners from the 2010 squad, including five starters and their libero. They also welcome four new first-year faces to the 2011 roster. Seniors Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic), Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich./Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) and Cassie Sowers (Williamsport, Ohio/Wesfall) will help to lead this team this season as they try to earn one of eight openings into the slimmed MAC Tournament field.
Removed from last season's roster are four players, including one starter in Jenn Swartz. Swartz was third on the team in kills during the 2010 season with 279. The middle blocker as the Eagles' all-time leader in sets played and averaged .71 blocks per set throughout the 2010 season.
BERRINGTON'S 16TH SEASON AT EMU: Head Coach Kim Berrington is entering her 16th season as head coach of the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team.
The seventh coach in the program's history, Berrington became its winningest coach on Sept. 20, 2003, as the Eagles posted a victory over East Carolina in the Coastal Carolina Tournament. The victory was Berrington's 110th win at the helm of the EMU program. During her tenure as head coach, Berrington has posted an overall record of 230-234 and a 115-136 mark in conference play.
In 10 of the last 11 seasons, she has led the Eagles to the MAC Tournament, with the 1999 campaign marking the first time the squad has played in the postseason event since the 1990 season. Her teams have also led the MAC in digs in seven of the last 12 seasons, including ranking nationally in five of those campaigns.
IT'S A LONG ROAD: Eastern Michigan starts off the 2011 season playing its 16 of its first 17 matches on the road. The Eagles will travel in its first four weekends heading to various tournaments across the nation. Eastern opens the season at the Shamrock Invitational held at Notre Dame, Aug. 26-29, and then travel to Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 3-4, for the IUPUI Tournament. From there, Eastern plays at Youngstown State, Sept. 6, before heading west to the Utah Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sept. 9-10. The Green and White play their final pre-conference tournament in Moon Township, Pa. at the Robert Morris Tournament , Sept. 16-17. Their only home match in that span comes on Aug. 31 when the Eagles play host to the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University.
STEIN DIGGING HER WAY INTO THE EMU RECORD BOOKS: Libero Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich./Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) was selected to the 2010 First-Team All Mid-American Conference volleyball team announced Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010.
Stein set a single season record for digs in 2010 by picking up 757. Stein is also on her way to setting a career record in digs. At third on the career digs list, she is 685 digs away from the record holder with 1,513. She was also named All-MAC first team in last season's campaign after leading the MAC in digs. Stein ranked fifth nationally in digs per set with 5.73. She was also second nationally with her 757 digs. Stein also set a school-record for digs in a match when she had 55 on Oct. 8 against Western Michigan University.
The Carleton, Mich. native is also a two-time Academic All-MAC selection. Being named to those teams in 2009 and 2010.
IAQUANIELLO NAMED TO MAC ALL-FIRST TEAM: A 2009 All-Freshman selection, Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) ranks second all-time in an EMU single-season with 515 kills and 11th in EMU career in with 927. The Plymouth, Mich. native is just the second EMU volleyball player to surpass the 500-kill plateau in a single-season. Averaging 3.90 kills per set, Iaquaniello ranked third in the MAC in put-a-ways and 49th nationally.
Twice named the MAC's West Division Offensive Player of the Week in 2010, Iaquaniello set an EMU Convocation Center record with 33 kills versus Western Michigan University, Oct. 8. It was also the fourth-highest total recorded by an EMU player, the most in a match for an EMU player in more than 12 years and the highest total by a player in the MAC since 2006.
MASON HAS MADE HER MARK: In three years setting for the Eagles, Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) has made her own dents in the EMU record book as she ranks fourth in career assists with 3,664. Mason was fourth in the MAC in assists, averaging 10.72 per game which was good for 47th in NCAA Division I.
A first-time ALL-MAC selection, Mason was a second team All-MAC selection following the 2010 season.
SUPER SOPHOMORE HITTERS: Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) rejoins the Eagles after successful freshman season. After getting off to a slow start for EMU, Roback was second on the team in kills with 324, averaging 2.45 per set in her 2010 season.
Just the fifth student-athlete in the program's history to be named to the league's All-Freshman team, Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville) is the second EMU rookie to garner the accolade since 2001. Short has played in 124 sets played this season, averaging 2.01 kills, 0.85 digs and 0.57 blocks per set to go along with a .282 hitting percentage. She has posted six matches with double-digits in kills and notched five matches with four-or-more blocks.
