Richman, Scarber and Wartley named as honorable mentions

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2011 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC team, as voted on by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 28 student-athletes were named to the team, including Eastern Michigan University standouts Ashlee Abraham and Jessica Hemingway, while Rebecca Richman, Angela Scarber and Ashley Wartley were honorable mentions to the team.

Hemingway, who recently wrapped up competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, was a co-captain of the team and carried a 3.33 grade point average as a criminal justice major. She advanced to the nationals after tying for the best overall height in the East Prelims in Indianapolis, Ind. on May 26. Also, Hemingway set a career-best in the pole vault, clearing a height 13-11.25 in April at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., breaking a school record in the process. She placed fourth in a talented pool at the Penn Relays before winning MAC Gold two weeks later.

Abraham won a combined six events during the outdoor season in individual and relay competition, including her 100-meter dash performance which won MAC Gold at Northern Illinois as she posted a time of 11.39. Abraham also advanced to the NCAA East Prelim for the 200-meter distance with a time of 23.86 at the EMU Twilight. At the East Prelims, she finished 22nd out of 48 runners, narrowly missing an invitation to the National Finals. Over the course of the season, she was a member of three winning relay teams, as she helped the 1,600 SMR squad win at the Raleigh Relays, the 4x100-meter relay team win at the Cal State LA Twilight Open, and the 4x100-meter team win its heat at the Penn Relays. Abraham has been as impressive in the classroom during her first two years of college as she has been on the track, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.41 as an exercise science major.

As a second-year pole vaulter, Rebecca Richman cleared a career-best height at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge en route to her best finish on the season. She competed at five meets for the Eagles, including the MAC Championships. Her 3.98 GPA landed her on the Dean's List, and she currently boasts the team's top GPA for the semester.

Angela Scarber's name was no stranger to the top-10 list this season as the junior thrower finished in that group on eight separate occasions throughout the outdoor season. She set a personal best in the Hammer throw with a toss of 159-03 at the MAC Championships and had her best shot put of the season at the Raleigh Relays, tossing the shot 42-04. The political science major had her best finish of the season at the Gina Relays, placing fourth in the hammer throw.

Ashley Wartley was a mainstay for the Eagles as a member of the sprint relay teams, helping the Green and White's 4x100-meter relay team win silver at the MAC Championships with a time of 45.75 in the event. Wartley was part of three first-place relay teams, including a win at the Paddock Invitational, the Cal State LA Twilight Open and their heat at the Penn Relay, and she also registered a fifth-place 100-meter hurdle time of 14.46 at the Paddock Invite. Wartley landed on the Dean's List by notching a 3.61 GPA as an exercise science major.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
