INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – It was Dejaa Shearer, Asia Rawls, Beverly Elcock and Shantavia Williams who comprised the 4x400-meter relay team at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor East Regional Prelims in Indianapolis, Ind., on May 28, but the dynamic foursome which got that far was unable to put together one of the top three times in their heat to advance to nationals.
The quartet garnered a sixth-place finish in their heat after running a time of 3:38.85, less than two and a half seconds behind the final qualifier in their heat, and missed an at-large bid as one of the next fastest finishers by just over two seconds. Eastern finished in 17th place overall.
The lone Eagle to advance from the East Prelims to nationals was senior women's pole vault specialist Jessica Hemingway, during the opening day of competition. Hemingway will have the opportunity to become the women's first NCAA Champion since Lela Nelson won the NCAA Championship in the heptathlon in 2005.
The national championships will kick off on June 8, in Des Moines, Iowa.
