YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell at the hands of fielding miscues and the right arm of Jake Sabol as he propelled visiting Central Michigan University to a 5-2 victory and the Chippewas' second consecutive Mid-American Conference West Division title at Oestrike Stadium this afternoon, May 21.
Sabol (5-3) went the distance, allowing two runs (1 earned) on six hits and struck out seven while walking none to earn his fifth victory of the season. It securing the MAC West title, CMU also earns the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament as Kent State has already clinched the top seed by winning the East Division.
Eastern Michigan committed three errors in the contest, two of which came in the midst of a four-run third inning for the Chippewas. CMU added another run in the fourth and cruised from there. Tyler Hall led the way by going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Four others tallied two hits for the 'Chips while Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) recorded two hits as well for the Eagles.
Senior right-hander Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) fell to 7-5 on the season after allowing five runs (3 earned) on 11 hits over six and two-thirds innings.
EMU concluded the regular season with a 34-20 overall record, 16-11 in the MAC and claimed the fifth-seed in next week's MAC Tournament. Meanwhile, CMU improves to 29-25 (17-9).
In the top of the first, CMU strung together a pair of hits. Tyler Hall led off with a single and then tried to go from first to third on Will Arnold's single to right, but senior Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) gunned him out for the second out of the inning and his 11th outfield assist of the season. That brought the Chippewas' rally to an abrupt halt and then Chaffins struck out Tom Howard to end the frame.
The Eagles tallied two hits in the second inning, but couldn't get anything going after that as Sabol struck out two straight batters to retire the side.
The Chippewas opened the scoring for the third time in the series, scoring four runs in the third inning, but not without the help of a couple of Eagle errors. Following a leadoff walk, Robbie Harman singled to the right side, but in trying to make a play on the ball, Zack Leonard's (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) error allowed Faiman to go from first to third to put CMU in business early with nobody out.
Hall singled to first to drive in a run, beating the toss from Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) to Chaffins by only a half-step. The next batter then tried to get both runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but the catcher, Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert C.C.), tried to get the out at third and was a hair late, loading the bases with still none out.
Another run scored on a double play by William Arnold to make it 2-0 before a wild pitch to the next hitter allowed the third run to score. Two batters later, Jordan Dean hustled out a double to left-center field, but a errant throw to the cutoff man allowed the fourth run to score, taking the wind out of EMU's sails and building enough momentum for the visitors.
CMU tacked on another run in the fourth to go up 5-0 before the Eagles finally cracked into the scoring column.
The Green and White tallied two runs in the sixth inning. The first run scored on a Rubino RBI double down the right field line. The second run came in as a result of an error by the CMU second baseman as he tried to get Sam Ott (Canton, Mich.-Salem) at first for the final out of the inning.
Sabol rebounded to retire the final 10 batters he faced to end the game.
Both teams will see their next action when the 2011 MAC Tournament commences Wednesday, May 28, at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The fifth-seeded Eagles will play the fourth-seeded Northern Illinois Huskies, who finished with an identical record, but claimed the tie-breaker over EMU. Second-seeded Central Michigan will play seventh-seeded Western Michigan to open tournament play.
