Betty Thomas has best race of the season, but no boats advance to finals
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team brought its season to a close this past weekend as the team competed at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
The women took to the waters on a gorgeous day, Friday, May 13, but the unlucky day didn't break its tradition for the Eagles as the squad raced four boats and failed to advance a boat to the final day of competition.
EMU's best finish of the day came in the Novice 4+ as the group finished third in their heat with a time of 8:41.44.
Betty Thomas raced in the women's singles, but a rough start ended her chances at advancing to the finals, as she finished fifth in her heat with a time of 9:07.41.
“Betty was eliminated in the single, but had her best race of the year,” said EMU head rowing coach Brad Holdren. “She just got beat by faster scullers.”
In the Eagles' varsity heavyweight 4+, EMU finished 27th overall and fifth in the heat with a time of 8:19.97. The same slow start that haunted Thomas would also be the downfall of the varsity 8+ as the oarsmen also started slowly in finishing sixth in their heat with a time of 7:15.49.
