Box Score
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Senior right-hander Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) turned in a clutch performance in earning his seventh victory of the season and leading the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to a pivotal Mid-American Conference series win over host University of Toledo in a 6-1 rout at windy and soggy Scott Park, Sunday afternoon, May 15.
Chaffins improved to 7-4 on the season after a sparkling seven-inning effort in which he allowed just a run on six hits while striking out four and walking only one. The New London, Ohio native faced one over the minimum through his first three innings of work and scattered just two hits over his final three frames.
The offense produced in a big way as well as the top of the order, which included Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union), Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley), went 6-for-12 with four RBI and five runs scored. Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert C.C.) led all batters with a 3-for-4 effort including two doubles and a run scored from the ninth spot in the order.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 33-18 overall, 15-9 in the MAC and clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament for the sixth straight season. Meanwhile, Toledo fell to 25-25 (14-10 MAC) with the loss.
Leonard got the Eagles on the board in the third inning with a sharp grounder through the right side to score Battiston, who reached with a bunt single. After a Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) sacrifice advanced runners to second and third, Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) laid down a successful squeeze bunt to score the game's second run as Ohrman crossed the dish without a play.
Trailing 2-0, the Rockets pulled a run closer on Mark Lapikas' RBI single to right field, scoring Jeff Cola from second base. The Eagles minimized the damage by throwing Lapikas out at second on a botched hit-and-run call for the second out before Magsig made a superb play on a ground ball to third to get James Miglin at first to end the inning.
EMU tacked on a trio of insurance runs in the seventh inning. Battiston started the big inning with a sacrifice fly to left to score Peterson from third to make it 3-1. Peterson reached with a double to left to lead off the inning and then advanced to third on a balk by Jared Locke.
The next batter, Ohrman, then singled off the backside of Locke (2-2) with a hot shot up the middle. The hit forced Toledo Head Coach Cory Mee to make the switch and bring Tyler Scott in relief of his starter who went six and one-third innings and allowed four runs (3 earned) on seven hits.
The first batter Scott faced was Leonard, and the EMU career hits and doubles leader, sent a run-scoring two-bagger to right field to make it a 4-1 Eagle lead. Sam Ott (Canton, Mich.-Salem) capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 5-1.
Ohrman gave the Green and White a 6-1 lead with a two-out hustling infield single that scored Battiston all the way from second base.
Chaffins gave way to right-hander Steve Weber for the final two innings and he retired six of the seven batters he saw to end the game and seal a crucial road series victory for the Eagles.
EMU pulls within a half-game of first place Central Michigan, which had its series finale against Western Michigan canceled due to inclement weather. The Eagles control their own fate as they host the Chippewas in a three-game series to conclude the regular season at Oestrike Stadium May 19-21. Thursday's opener is slated for 6 p.m.
