TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – A nine-run fifth inning highlighted an offensive onslaught for the Eastern Michigan University baseball team as it handed the University of Toledo its first home loss of the season in an, 18-2, decision in the opener of a pivotal three-game Mid-American Conference series at Scott Park, today, May 13.
The EMU offense broke out of its funk from a week ago by registering a season-high 18 runs on 23 hits. Every position starter recorded at least one hit led by Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.), who each recorded four-hit games. Leonard's performance gives him 300 hits for his career.
Five other Eagles also posted multi-hit games including Wally Gerbus (Fairfield, Ohio-Stephen T. Baden) and Aaron Chavez (Milpitas, Calif.-Milpitas-Ohlone C.C.) who came off the bench to tally two hits.
Senior left-hander Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) had more than enough run support, but continued to stay sharp all the way through as he went seven strong innings and allowed just one run on five hits, tying a season-high with eight strikeouts while issuing just one walk to move his record to an even 5-5 on the season, 5-3 in MAC starts.
With the win, the Eagles move into a first place tie with Central Michigan after it dropped its series opener to Western Michigan today. EMU improved to 32-17 overall, 14-8 in the MAC while Toledo falls to 24-24 (13-9 MAC).
Eastern Michigan cracked the scoreboard early with a first inning run on Magsig's two-out RBI single up the middle. The junior took the first pitch he saw from Kyle Shaw and drove a line drive into center field to score Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union), who reached on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the game.
The Eagles added to its lead with two runs in the third inning to make it 3-0. Magsig tacked on his second run-scoring single of the game to give him 28 for the season. Shortly thereafter, Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) singled through the left side to bring home Leonard and give Wendzicki a more comfortable cushion.
The senior left-hander Wendzicki pitched four and two-thirds scoreless before allowing his only run of the day in the fifth inning. It was the fifth time in his last six outings that the Brook Park, Ohio native has gone seven innings or more.
His counterpart, fellow southpaw Kyle Shaw (6-3), lasted just three-plus innings and allowed three runs on six hits before being replaced by Adam Tyson with nobody out in the top of the fourth. The move didn't seem to effect the EMU lineup, though, as it put another two-spot on the board thanks to an RBI double by Battiston and Brent Ohrman's (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) sacrifice fly to make it 5-0, Eagles.
The flood gates opened in the fifth inning. The Green and White sent 15 batters to the dish and scored nine runs. Six Eagles recorded run-scoring hits including Sam Ott (Canton, Mich.-Salem), who doubled to right field, driving in two. He finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Magsig added the third of his four RBI singles on the afternoon as well.
EMU then posted consecutive two-run frames to make it five straight innings with at least two runs scored. The Eagles out-hit the Rockets, 23-7, in the contest and improved to 20-11 on the road this season.
Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) threw the final two innings for EMU, allowing a ninth inning run to the Rockets on two hits while striking out two and walking one.
Sophomore Joe Battistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) will toe the rubber for the Eagles in game two tomorrow, May 14. Lincoln Rassi will counter for the Rockets in a contest slated for 1 p.m.
