Eagles rally from down 3-2 for the win
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team fought back from a late deficit, earning the final two points of its match to earn a 4-3 win over the University at Buffalo, here, Saturday afternoon, at the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.
After winning the doubles point, the Eagles dropped the next two matches at the No. 1 and the No. 6 spots as Miriam Westerink (No. 1 spot) was forced to retire due to injury after the opening set, and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr was defeated by UB's Miranda Podlas in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Nino Mebuke would start the Eagles' rally by taking her match at the No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over Buffalo's Adi Petrova. Another Bulls' win would have the home team down 3-2 with just two matches remaining to be finished.
Mariya Toncheva made quick work of the visitor, Kira Golenko, scoring a 6-0, 6-4 win in the No. 4 slot, before the match would come down to the No. 3 match.
Xu Chang, after winning the first set 6-4, was forced to the brink with Buffalo's Marta Stoyanova, but with her entire team cheering her on, was able to close out the match in two sets, scoring a 7-6 (4) second set decision.
"We really needed this win today," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Injuries were catching up to us and we had to show a lot of heart and guts to get this victory. The ladies did just that today. The win puts us in a tie for third in the MAC at the moment and our last three matches will decide a lot for us."
Eastern will be back on the courts April 15 to take on Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
