COMPLETE RESULTS
CHARLESTON, West Va. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team had its most successful outing of the season this weekend, participating in the 37th Annual West Virginia Governor's Cup in Charleston, West Va.
The Eagles put five boats in the water and came out on top in three of the five races, winning the Novice 4+ race, the Varsity 8+ race and the Varsity 8+ dash.
In the Novice 4+, Rumbidzai Muskwe, Dayna Bergman, Katherine Anderson and Rachel Morrissey had a time of 6:12.8, beating out Penn State, Ohio, Case Western, John Carroll and Dennison.
"Winning the women's Novice 4+ is a great achievement for the ladies and helps us look to a very strong future next year," said head coach Brad Holdren. "These young ladies will certainly have an impact on our top varsity boat next year."
The Varsity 8+ was also a successful race for EMU, as the boat crossed the finish line in a time of 6:27 to secure the win. In that race, Clara Balmer, Brittany Jones, Taylor Cyr, Briana Nesmith, Beatrice Korte, Brenda Gerdeman, Megan Luther, Rebecca Dudus and Lauren Foley grinded out a tough win over five other boats including three from Penn State and another Ohio crew team.
Finally, the Varsity 8+ dash also went to the Eagles, as they narrowly edged out Ohio, crossing a half-second before the Bobcats with a time of 1:24.3.
"Our girls are finally starting to believe in their own abilities and this win should help us perform much better in the next two races," Holdren added.
In the women's Varsity 4+ the squad finished in a disapointing third place. They made a few mistakes early in the race and the defecit was just too much to recover from.
"All in all it was a much needed excellent weekend for the rowing team," Holdren said.
