EMU remains perfect at home on the season, only dropping one set against NIU

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Northern Illinois University Huskies were no match for the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team as the Eagles handily beat the Huskies, 7-0, in Eastern's Mid-American Conference home opener, Friday afternoon, April 1, at the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Three Eagles served up bagels and breadsticks (that is, winning one set 6-0 and another set 6-1) in the team's overall dominance on the day, as the host was able to spoil NIU's MAC opener.

In the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 spots, Miriam Westerink, Xu Chang and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr were each able to defeat their respective opponents 6-0, 6-1 in singles competition. Their teammates followed, as Mariya Toncheva took down Emily Rogers in the No. 3 spot, earning 7-5 and 6-4 wins. At the No. 6 spot, Celine Donnet made quick work of her opponent with a 6-0 opening set win and a 6-3 win in the final set.

Marcela Rivero was the only Eagle to drop a set on the day, although she still earned a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win.

The Green and White were also able to overpower the Huskies in doubles play, as Westerink and Nino Mebuke teamed together for an 8-1 win, and the pairs of Xu and de'Lisle-Tarr, and Mariya Toncheva and Rivero each earned 8-4 wins.

"The ladies did a great job of coming out and taking care of business today," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We really limped through the week with some health issues, but the training staff did a great job getting us ready and the team came to play today. It's a good feeling to be at home since traveling the last two months, and we're looking forward to a home series again next weekend with Akron and Buffalo."

As Ray mentioned, the Eagles will stay home to take on the Zips and the Bulls, here at the Chippewa Raquet Club on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9. Both matches start at 1 p.m.
