EMU TRAVELS TO AKRON FOR FIRST-ROUND TOURNAMENT GAME: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will open the 2011 FirstEnergy Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday, March 8, on the road at Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio against the University of Akron Zips. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The Eagles enter the game as the No. 11 seed while Akron is the No. 6 seed. The winner of Tuesday's game will meet No. 3 seed Miami University in a quarterfinal game at 2:30 p.m., March 10, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Eastern has a 9-21 overall record while the Zips are 19-12.
FAMILIAR LOOK: The EMU-Akron match up will be a rematch of last year's MAC Tournament quarterfinal game that saw the Zips win a double-overtime thriller, 97-89, March 11, 2010, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Zips also have a couple of familiar faces on the bench. Akron Head Coach Keith Dambrot was an EMU assistant coach for three years, from 1986-89. Akron Assistant Coach Charles Thomas is a twin brother of current EMU Assistant Coach Carl Thomas. The Thomas twins played for EMU from 1988-91.
EAGLES SHORT ON TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team enters this week's FirstEnergy Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament with a team short on experience in post-season action. Just six current EMU roster players have seen action in MAC Tournaments. Sophomore Matt Balkema (Warren, Mich.-Cousino) was on the roster last year, but did not see action and junior Kamil Janton (Tarnow, Poland-Bartlett (Ill.) was on the roster the past two seasons but did not play in either tournament
GETTING IN ON THE ACTION: The Eagles had 10 players break into the scoring column in the 69-50 win over Toledo, March 5, in the annual Senior Day Game which was the final regular-season game of the 2010-11 season. Senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) led the way with 27 points while sophomore guard J.R. Sims (Ft. Wayne, Ind.-Snider) and sophomore center Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) each added nine points and sophomore guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) added eight.
BOWDRY MAKES IT 39 DOUBLE-DOUBLES: When senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) scored 27 points with 10 rebounds in his final Convocation Center appearance Saturday, March 5, against Toledo, it marked the 39th double-double of his career.
