Rowers Race Four Boats Against Big East, Big Ten Competition

The Indiana Invitational played host for this weekend's regatta
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team was unable to keep their oars in line with that of the University of Notre Dame, Purdue University and the host, Indiana University, as the Eagles finished last in each of its four races, Sunday, March 27, at the Indiana Invitational.
Eastern took to the waters with an eight mile per hour wind at their backs on the crisp morning, as the team competed in the Varsity 8+, the Varsity 4+, the 3rd Varsity 8+ and the Novice.
In the Varsity 8+, the lineup of Clara Balmer, Briana Nesmith, Lauren Foley, Becky Dudus, Betty Thomas, Brenda Gerdeman, Beatrice Korte, Taylor Cyr and Jen Shanafelt led EMU off to a fast start, but the group was unable to maintain, as Indiana pulled away for the win, and the Eagles finished fourth with a time of 7:25.0.
In the Varsity 4+, Cady Griffin, Brittany Jones, Dayna Bergman, KC Anderson and Megan Luther raced against two UND boats and one apiece from Indiana and Purdue. EMU finished 40 seconds behind the Boilermakers with a time of 9:18.5.
The 3rd Varsity 8+ was the closest race for the Eagles as the team finished 31 seconds out of first place with a time of 7:55.8, and the team, competing in a head-to-head in the Novice race, finished in 10:02.5 against Purdue.
EMU will race again on April 2 at Lubbers Cup Regatta.
